I am accepting new clients as of 4/23/2024. Inevitably, at some point in our lives we feel overwhelmed and exhausted as we try to keep it together in this incessantly pressurized world. If you're feeling swallowed up by depression, anxiety, stress, anger, or just emptiness, it’s important to remember that the way you feel right now isn’t how you have to feel tomorrow. The truth is that this negative emotion is indicating that certain aspects of your life are demanding to be addressed, as they would if you sprained your ankle. It is a signal that you are ready to find comfort and relief, ready for growth and change.

For me the heart of the work involves helping you more effectively work through and control painful and sometimes chronic feelings of depression, anxiety sadness and/or anger as well as repetitive behaviors that are dysfunctional including conflicts in relationships.
People typically come to see me because they are experiencing psychological distress and/or interpersonal difficulties. The in-depth look at these issues not only leads to symptom relief but to longterm change of dysfunctional and painful (sometimes unconscious) ways we may perceive and judge ourselves and to recognize and build on strengths. I enjoy being a psychotherapist in part because it is satisfying and exciting to see people become more insightful, effective and confident in each of the important areas of their lives. II have been doing this work for 35+ years and plan to continue for many years.

My specializations include: depression; anxiety; traumatic stress; interpersonal/family conflict; poor impulse control; substance abuse; grief/loss; and self-esteem.
When life doesn't go as planned it can leave you feeling overwhelmed, unsure, and stuck. Unresolved over time, these challenges can result in feelings of anxiety, depression, or stress that you just can't seem to kick. Maybe you're just starting to sense that something is wrong or perhaps you've been struggling for quite some time. Figuring out how to overcome these obstacles can be stressful, but there is no need to struggle alone. It's possible to heal from the past, have more fulfilling relationships, break free from limiting patterns, and feel good about yourself!

I strive to create a warm and inviting relationship with my clients so that everyone in the room feels comfortable with being vulnerable. That takes patience and a delicate touch, but it is worth it! I would love to help you recognize your blind spots that might be inhibiting your growth.

I especially love the opportunity to support people at transition points in their lives: career and workplace difficulties, life changes, and the anxiety, depression and 'stuckness' those can bring about.
Are you unsatisfied with your relationships or work, and it's not clear why? Are you looking for support with chosen or unchosen transitions? Are you having trouble making changes in your life? I help people explore their needs and values, and to feel empowered to set healthy boundaries with significant others, family members, managers and colleagues. I love helping others clarify their values and find direction. I'm here to support you at a pace that feels right for you.

I have experience working with people struggling with issues related to depression, anxiety, life transitions, gender identity, queer issues, and relationship and family challenges.
Living in a world filled with poverty, marginalization, oppression, and pandemic(s) can feel daunting and lead people to feel as though they have little agency. Therapy can be a helpful place to explore the places in our lives where we do have agency, where we are able to make tangible changes-often times this is in our interpersonal relationships. I work from an attachment focused and relational cultural perspective and my theoretical orientation is grounded in feminist practice that relies heavily on the exploration of identities, oppression, intersectionality, and their impact on social and emotional functioning.

I enjoy helping people who struggle with developmental trauma, perfectionism, anger, substance (mis)use or addictive behaviors, OCD, anxiety struggles including agoraphobia/panic/generalized anxiety, depression, and shame.
Welcome! I'm glad you're here and seeking support - we all deserve it. I work with adult individuals, and also adult sibling pairs. My way of assisting in your process is to help you have a different and better relationship with yourself by truly getting to know all of you - yes, even the parts of you who scare or embarrass you. Together we can work toward a more integrated whole, where you can exist with yourself in harmony. The results tend to be less shame and self-criticism, less internal and external avoidance, more self-compassion, and more manageable moods and behaviors.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
