Whether it depression, anxiety, trauma, or relationship concerns I provide proven interventions to help overcome these obstacles.
Currently NOT accepting new clients. "Pain knows no discrimination, neither does healing." Hardships are not exclusive to some, yet inclusive of all. There are specific points in life when we all can benefit from a safe, warm, and non-judgmental environment to process one's concerns and explore answers to improve one's quality of life. It is no secret that LIFE can feel tremendously overwhelming and heavy at points. It is a privilege to come alongside my clients to assist in facilitating personal growth and healing. Therapy is indeed a process, but we were not meant to take this journey alone, allow me to come alongside you.

I work with clients (from age 17 through adulthood) in individual, marital, and family counseling, who experience depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship issues.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor with 28 years of experience, I will provide a safe, trusting and nonjudgmental environment that promotes healing, personal growth and emotional wholeness. My approach to therapy is unique to fit each individual. As we go through the counseling process together, we will identify your needs and match those with the practical skills needed. We also look at the historical "baggage" which could prevent the achievement of your goals and deal with those together.

I am here to help clients experiencing stress, overwhelm, anxiety, and depression due to impacting their quality of life. It takes courage to take positive steps toward change and the life you want, but counseling can be an empowering experience when we are ready and willing to be seen and understood. It is then that we are able to address concerns or habits that can cause distress and create barriers. My passion is in walking alongside someone through whatever obstacles they might be trying to overcome, any battles they are fighting, and any challenges they are facing.

There are many things that can contribute to the stressors of life. Our mental health and overall sense of well-being are incredibly important to how we deal with this stress. For some people there are very clear mental health issues such as symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mood issues that have caused problems for them. For other people there may not be identifiable mental health issues, rather a general sense that something in life is not going right, or something needs to change.

A strong relationship with the counselor is essential for the counseling process. The client comes to the process with a commitment for change. Sometimes the commitment is marginal and helping fortify that commitment is the initial part of our work. I believe that my most effective work is with people who struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, family of origin issues and trauma. I work extensively with clients who have personality disorders (ingrained patterns of self defeating behavior). My practice is geared toward adolescents 13 years old through senior adults. I work with individuals and couples/families.

My areas of interest and experience are working with issues related to: Depression, anxiety, history of physical or sexual abuse, mood disorders, eating disorders, self-esteem, relationship conflict, family conflict, college/career transition, personality disorders, parenting concerns, post partum depression, drug or alcohol abuse, and grief.
At some point, we often find ourselves struggling to get past a problem, whether that problem is with an important relationship, or an inner emotional struggle. I enjoy working with others to understand how one came to be in such conflict and how one can move from old ways of coping to newer healthier ways. I believe working from a relational perspective is an important way to create an atmosphere of trust. I strive to help my patients better understand their thoughts, feelings, and actions. The more we know about ourselves the more freedom we have to make better choices in work, play, and relationships.

As a counselor, it is my passion to assist those through the struggles along life's journey. We are all living through difficult times which can make us feel isolated, alone, anxious depressed or just extra. In addition, these stressors can also increase how we experience and perceive the stressors of everyday life as well as how we communicate and interact in relationships with those we love the most. If you want to gain some control over your emotions so that you are living the life you deserve, then therapy could be the answer for you and I would be honored to be on this journey with you.

I invite you to join me in a dialogue, the process of "creative engagement", through which many of my patients have come to understand their emotional conflicts and the source of their distress; they feel recognized, supported, and cared for; they overcame anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviors, trauma and addiction.
Therapy is a journey of self-discovery, becoming who you are meant to be, and I am here to share this courageous "deep dive". Are you ready to make conscious those things you already feel so raw and vulnerably in your body, to seat your feelings so close as to live to the point of tears? Like picking up a new and unfamiliar musical instrument, the first necessary step is to begin, does not matter where, or how, poorly or well. Beginning is difficult, we are reluctant to take that first close-in, brave step to reclaiming the happiness of actually having started. Living to the fullest is my goal for all of us.

I want to help you by offering a non-judgmental, warm and accepting atmosphere where you can voice your concerns, fears, and feelings that you are experiencing. Confusion, depression, anger and sadness are some of the reasons people come in to therapy. They have doubts about their own feelings, thoughts and sometimes identity, which results in lowered self esteem and a lack of personal motivation. Therapy won't change who you are, it improves who you already are, leading to self acceptance and peace.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
