I build resilience by teaching skills to manage anxiety, depression, life's ups and downs, be it learning to be kinder to yourself or learning to manage feelings when relationships change.
Life can get really tough sometimes and I think we all need a place to come and just BE REAL with another person. Vent feelings, share thoughts that one is not really comfortable sharing with close friends and family, just lay it all out however messy. ABOUT ME: I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in both California and New York with over 15 years in the field. I got my Masters degree in Integral Counseling Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA in 2008. My areas of study was Gestalt Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Creative Arts Therapy.

I have provided psychotherapy to adults experiencing depression, anxiety, grief/loss, family difficulties, and academic struggles, and prefer to take a collaborative approach specific to any concerns that you might have.
As a clinical psychologist specializing in relationship difficulties, I have worked with many individuals who struggle with conflict in their intimate relationships, experience fears about closeness or intimacy, feel anxiety about relating to others, and those who have trouble feeling generally satisfied in their relationships. I believe that dissatisfying relationships contribute to emotional stress and pain, and that promoting stronger, healthier relationships can lead to people experiencing happier and more productive lives. I work with individuals to explore these struggles and develop understanding or insight about their patterns in relationships, with the ultimate goal of helping people have a different experience in their current relationships.

I want to help you get to the bottom of lingering issues with past trauma, depression and anxiety in order to promote whole and complete healing, not just put a temporary fix on symptoms.
Have you reviewed multiple write ups on Psychology Today looking for the right therapist? Do you feel confused because there are so many individuals listed that are willing and ready to help? The right "fit" is so important to me and I hope that you might consider my holistic and uplifting approach to treatment. I am so honored and humbled to help people on their path to healing and I strive to keep therapy relevant and comfortable. Most clients tell me, "You are not like any therapist that I have ever met before!". I always take this as a compliment.

Dealing with trauma, depression, and anxiety can be incredibly challenging. The consequences of trauma often include struggling with long-term depression & anxiety. Moreover, one can just feel overwhelmed from everyday societal pressures like interpersonal issues, financial stress and the climate crisis. Everyone deserves a safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment and I am here to help you do that.

Do you often criticize yourself for making a mistake or worry that you are a bad person? Do you tend to blame yourself when something goes wrong? If so, you are not alone. I work with folks on learning how to ground in the present moment when these feelings are overwhelming and how to create new ways of seeing themselves. I also work with my clients on discovering how they came to develop these tendencies based on cultural, familial, and societal messaging. I have specialized training in eating disorders/disordered eating, trauma, anxiety, depression, and perfectionism. I often work with women exploring queerness for the first time.

Some of the concerns people bring to therapy include: sadness, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, ADHD, narcissism, self-esteem, and the emotional impact of health problems.
I have been a psychotherapist since 1990 and work with adults, couples, and families. Empathy, warmth, humor, and compassion are personal qualities I bring to our work, in addition to knowledge of theories and strategies. My experience and maturity help my clients deepen their understanding of themselves and their relationships, assist them to make changes, and accept what cannot be changed. I also keep in mind the impact of early family patterns on current struggles and create space for insight and self-reflection. Lifelong learning does not stop, and I bring this commitment to my practice.

My specialties include issues of loss and trauma, depression, anxiety, medical concerns, life changes, and stressful family or workplace relationships.
When things are difficult, it can isolate us, drain our emotional reserves, and limit our ability to look at things in new ways. I work to help clients appreciate the depth of their experience, and support them toward personal strength and healthier relationships. My style is open, collaborative, direct, and supportive. I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years in private practice. I also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Rochester's Counseling Center for many years.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
