I have extensive education and training in trauma as well as working with individuals who are having challenges with anxiety and depression.
I often find myself telling people, "Life happens, but what matters most is what you do about it". We all have experienced, at one time or another, a situation that has us needing to take a breath. Anxiety, depression, trauma and loss/grief are just a few things that I can help you work through by providing a safe space for self reflection and discovery. This is your life and I am simply here to help you and your family discover what works for you!

Are you searching for a way to put the joy back in your life? Just as we all want happiness, success, and meaningful relationships, we also sometimes feel broken and overwhelmed. Sometimes the events in our lives simply overshadow our ability to cope. This is when I am able to help. I help those who seek solutions to everyday life problems. I work with adults, teenagers, and families struggling with stress, depression, anxiety, grief, relationship problems, and life transitions. In addition, I specialize in working with those struggling with adoption issues (both adoptees and parents).

Together we learn mindfulness, grounding techniques, and other strategies to reduce anxiety and depression.
I provide services to individuals with an open heart and open mind. I base our work on where you are mentally and emotionally. Together we examine past traumas and current stressors to begin to understand why sometimes we get to a place we never thought we would be. With an emphasis on positive psychology and learning to identify and grow strengths, we begin the healing process. Because an essential aspect of therapy is rapport with your therapist, I spend time growing trust a deeper understanding with each client. I will challenge you but also provide support, encouragement, and empathy when needed.

CSI's licensed therapists and APRN can help your family with a variety of issues including: past trauma; strained relationships; attachment issues; mental health disorders such as depression, ADHD, anxiety, and others; behavioral problems such as hitting, yelling, isolating, risk-taking behaviors, and hurting themselves; divorce; grief and loss.
Sometimes childhood is interrupted by crisis—feelings and situations too big for children, teens and families to deal with on their own. Often children (especially teens) express their sadness, fear and anger through their behaviors and attitude. This "acting out" is especially challenging to caregivers. Child Saving Institute (CSI) offers comprehensive mental health services including pediatric, adolescent and family therapy alongside psychiatric evaluations and medication management services to children, teens and young adults.

I specialize in behavior disorders, ADHD, Autism, family conflict, adjustment, psychological evaluations, depression, and anxiety.
I believe in a rapport-based approach to therapy: mainly authenticity in communication and interpersonal development of relationships. I aim to remove stigmas and depathologize issues, focusing on outcomes over symptoms. My philosophy is that people are often unaware of their core values, or stressors have made them seem far too distant. When building acceptance around the reality of problems facing families, and focusing on objectives that improve wellness, change can occur. The behavioral interventions, objectivity, and support found in the therapeutic relationship help lead individuals and families to their goals.

It's the perfect time to create the life and relationships you want! Therapy doesn't have to be an anxiety producing activity. Long-lasting change takes patience and time to accomplish. However, I understand that hard work is necessary to achieve the timely results clients appreciate, so I am direct in my approach. I love helping people enjoy their lives more fully and accomplish their goals by helping them decrease their depression and anxiety symptoms and increase their self-esteem. I also enjoy helping couples work through the problems that are keeping them from having thriving relationships.

What does it mean to "take care of your mental health?" It's easier to tell when you aren't taking care of it: chronic stress, exhaustion, worry, and panic are all signs your mental health is suffering. If untreated, you could start having nightmares, poor health, trouble in your relationships, and difficulty staying on top of work or school. There are many things that can lead to mental health struggles, like a too-busy schedule, a chronic illness or someone else's troubles, a major life transition, or a death of someone close to you. Or, it could seem to come out of the blue, caused by nothing at all.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
