During individual counseling, I have helped clients challenge negative thoughts at the root of feelings of depression, stress, or anxiety and hinder action toward goals.
It is normal for any relationship to have ups and downs, but you do not have to stay stuck in a cycle of negativity. Are you at a crossroads in your marriage or partnership? Are you dealing with past or present unhealthy family dynamics? If so, couples or family counseling can help. Problems in relationships can vary, as can the perspective of those problems. As a licensed counselor, I will assist you in your journey of working through your concerns, learning to communicate effectively, actively listening to your loved one's point of view, and navigating out of your current circumstances toward the life that you desire.

I describe myself as a "general practitioner" and therefore most often see clients struggling with depression and/or anxiety.
Most challenges we face as humans are "normal" as opposed to there being something "wrong" with us. However, we can often feel alone and overwhelmed when facing problems. Talking to a caring person can make a difference. I believe it helps to have an objective, knowledgeable and wise coach to help you find your way. I like to use analogies and work as a team with a client.

We will all experience depression, anxiety, stress and trauma at different chapters of our lives. Occasionally everyone needs a professional counselor to talk out our problems and find real solutions for real problems. You have already made a big step by considering counseling; now make the next step by calling a licensed therapist. It is time to start the healing process at your own pace with a therapist's professional and confidential support. The best practice is to choose a therapist who has the clinical expertise as well as the real-life experiences who can relate to you on a personal level.

In therapy, I help in the process of psychological growth and overcoming specific concerns including anxiety, depression, social and relationship issues, struggles with meaning, and stress.
There are many important reasons why people choose to pursue therapy, yet all are driven to accomplish lasting change and satisfaction in their lives. Every person starts from a different place. Some come suffering, unfulfilled, or anxious. Some yearn for a discovery of meaning, wholeness, or personal growth. Often, people seek to become free of old patterns, achieve closer and more satisfying relationships, or find ways to just get unstuck. Wherever they find themselves, I am dedicated to helping my clients get to the heart of what troubles them so they can be free to live richer, more satisfying lives.

"I'm okay. Everything's alright". You tell yourself this repetitively while withholding tears and smiling for everyone else. You secretly struggle to believe what God says about you. Some days you feel so alone. You battle to feel loved and good enough to be the person God created you to be. Anxiety, depression, fear, grief, loss, shame and trauma have become emotional strongholds. Life seems to keep coming and you feel depleted. You ultimately want to live in freedom in your mind, no longer enslaved by the pain of the past, comparison, and even fear that your future will be failure. You desire to sense hope and fulfillment again.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
