Over the years, I have effectively addressed a wide variety of problems, including depression, anxiety, addictions, cross-cultural issues, grief, and chronic illness.
There is nothing like being listened to and understood on a deep level, with genuine interest and acceptance. This is what I strive to offer in therapy or analysis, as we explore together your hopes and dreams, your losses and regrets, your longings and fears. Many people come to therapy to free themselves from self-defeating patterns and the legacy of past traumas, so they can be more truly themselves in relation to others and live with greater satisfaction and meaning. My analytic training enables me to work intensively, and I enjoy incorporating experiential techniques like journaling, psychodrama, and art.

I specialize in young adult issues such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationships, and identity.
Feeling chronic negative emotions such as sadness, anger, anxiety, or loneliness is often a sign that something in our relationships has gone awry. By the time we attend psychotherapy, the task of altering our relationships may feel difficult or impossible to navigate alone. As a psychodynamic therapist, I am interested in how your early relationships impact your personality, worldview, attachment, perceptions, and coping mechanisms. Through compassion, challenge and sometimes humor, I aim to help my patients gain insight, learn new ways of relating to others, and implement change in order to heal, grow, and flourish.

There are times when things are not going as well as we'd like in our family, social or work relationships, particularly post-Covid. You may feel alone, depressed, anxious, or have conflict or discomfort with those you care about. In my psychotherapy practice I help couples, individuals & families restore their sense of well being and connection. People learn how to be more present and intentional in accordance with their values. Partners learn to be safely available to each other through a dialogue process that teaches more effective listening, deeper understanding and empathy. In person and Telehealth meetings are offered.

I think it's very important to find a therapist who is a GOOD FIT for you with your unique needs. While I think psychodynamically, which means that I focus on helping my clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships, I tend to be pragmatic and problem solving. My style is professional, yet relaxed and I'm appreciated for being both compassionate and having a sense of humor in my work. I see my patients in individual psychotherapy and very frequently in group therapy as well. Please note that I am only accepting new patients for group therapy.

Sometimes, just getting through the day can be very hard. There are so many roles that we play: Perhaps we are working, studying, parenting, teaching, coaching, not to mention shopping, cooking, maintaining a household, sharing life with someone and trying our best to do it all. Am I talking about you?

I’m proud to be a wise elder. I have academic strengths & years of working with people, but most of all, I have the wisdom that comes with age & the intuition to connect & mindshare with you. Maybe you’ve never felt understood & have a negative self-concept projected onto you by dysfunctional elders that you carried into the present. Know that you have the innate human ability to heal. You can be helped to see the roots of your old maladaptive beliefs & you can replace them with positive, realistic ones for today-a new narrative for your life.

I offer a strength base therapy approach focused on the possibilities for change. I help children, teens, adults and families get unstuck from unproductive patters of relation and practice more productive ways of communication. Being from Venezuela, and raising my own multicultural family, I am passionate by the challenges of meshing cultures to raise emphatic, tolerant and successful children and adolescents. I believe building and maintaining a successful family system requires the art of juggling. I help parents use their own resources to balance their many roles and coach kids and teens through their diverse relationships.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
