I work with adults of any age, gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Together we address a range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, work and career challenges, and self-image and self-worth. Often there are deeper and more long-standing issues stemming from early life experiences. I specialize in helping people to connect with the unconscious script they are enacting, which is often in contradiction to their stated desires for their lives. To read more about my approach please visit my website at "www.drlaurajune.com"

I have expertise in working with people suffering from depression, anxiety, addiction, interpersonal and existential issues.
People often come to therapy when they are seeking relief from mental or emotional pain. I believe much of this inner pain comes from the methods we learn throughout our life to protect us from troubling thoughts and emotions, as well as from the difficulties in our environment. In psychotherapy, deep and lasting healing occurs when we develop awareness into the nature of our thinking and feeling, how they are shaped by experience, and the important functions they serve in the ways we manage our lives.

I appreciate the quote, "You don't have to be sick to get better." As a solution-focused therapist, I'll work with you to identify strengths that can be applied in unique ways to help alleviate current struggles and put you back on the path to the best version of you. This approach is effective for both long-standing issues such as chronic anxiety or depression, as well as more acute issues including relationship challenges and immediate life changes. Starting from session one we collaborate on establishing goals for our work, develop customized tools you can use immediately, and then build on that foundation for lasting success.

Life is challenging. Breathe. The challenges experienced can lead to anger, anxiety, worry, grief, and/or depression. When this occurs in your life, you need support with getting back to the best version of you. You want to talk to someone you can trust, be vulnerable with, and who will listen to you.

*Accepting new clients* Over the past year the way we go about our day to day lives has changed drastically. This has led to an increase in stress, anxiety, depression and feeling overwhelmed for many of us. Children and young adults have been hit especially hard as they have had to miss out on cultural milestones and important lessons in face to face peer interactions that would typically happen at school. These changes have impacted the mental health of so many of us. My goal is to help kids/teens/young adults adjust to these changes and to life changes such as graduating high school and weighing pro's and cons of college.

I work with individuals and couples seeking therapy for issues including relationships, depression, anxiety, sexuality, aging, and life transitions.
Psychotherapy is about listening. As a therapist I strive to listen with compassion and depth to help my clients hear their own voices of change and healing. How I understand psychotherapy to work is best expressed by Simone Weil: "Those who are unhappy have no need for anything in this world but people capable of giving them their attention. The capacity to give one's attention to a sufferer is a very rare and difficult thing; it is almost a miracle; it is a miracle." I surely cannot do miracles! But together with my clients I have watched miracles happen.

Let’s face it, life has a tendency to wear us all down--be it the death of a loved one, illness, traumatic experiences, or even just the demands of everyday life. As a result, we might find ourselves plagued by chronic stress, anxiety, or depression. Perhaps you find yourself feeling hopeless, trapped, or isolated. Maybe you’ve felt as though you've been merely surviving life, instead of actually living it. If so, know that you are not alone, and change is possible! I’m extremely passionate and dedicated to helping my clients heal, improve their lives, and reach their personal goals.

My areas of clinical interest include: personality disorders, depression & mood disorders, anxiety, loss & bereavement, trauma - especially trauma occurring in the context of college fraternity structures - relationship & intimacy issues, creative/artistic blocks and issues specific to athletes and athletic performance, and individual & family transitions.
I am trained as a psychoanalyst and practice a relational form of psychodynamic therapy that views the therapeutic relationship as the site of potential transformation. I often have success working with people who have had negative or lackluster experiences in previous therapies and those who are ambivalent about beginning therapy. I specialize in longterm relational work and in working with adult men and athletes.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
