I am an Annapolis based clinical psychologist. I am also a wife, mother, daughter and friend. I see adults struggling with many issues, including: work/academic, anxiety,depression/mood, sports, health issues and relationship problems. I believe that it's a psychologist's job to collaborate with clients on areas of change. We should nurture, challenge and ultimately become unnecessary.

Feeling depressed, anxious and stressed? These feelings can impact our most important relationships. And, our most important relationships can activate theses feelings in us as well. Being able to talk with someone in a non-judgmental atmosphere can be helpful as we explore your thoughts and feelings in new way. Therapy can also help us to look more closely at the repetitious patterns in our feelings and behaviors and learn, though reflection, self discovery and insight, how to re-frame and rebuild our lives in a way that brings us joy and hope!

There are challenging seasons in everyone’s life that may lead to anxiety, depression, stress, relational strain, hurt, anger, and grief. But God didn’t intend for us to walk through life alone, nor to carry our burdens alone. My desire as a Christian Counselor is to come alongside you during these difficult times, to be an encouragement to you, a sounding board when you need to vent, an accountability partner when you need to change, and a reminder of hope when you feel you’ve lost your way. You do matter, and you are worth dedicating the time to find healing and wholeness.

Whether you are coping with anxiety or depression, or are challenged by life’s circumstances, you can be happier.
Everyone experiences times in their lives when they feel stuck. Maybe you are struggling with anxiety, awake at night worried about the future and paralyzed during the day, unable to take the steps you think might make things better. Or, maybe you are struggling with relationships in your life: a partner, children, friends or colleagues. You aren’t feeling heard or valued and you worry about where things are headed. Or, perhaps you are living with the effects of a trauma that has long since passed but seems to be with you every day. In any case, you don’t want things to continue like this. Something has to change.

This expertise allows me to understand and help people facing grief, depression, and profound loneliness.
Loving well and living fully - learning to live with changes in our lives with grace, wisdom and compassion - is what most of us wish for. And yet, the struggles of everyday life leave many of us feeling fearful, worried or sad and sometimes disconnected or alone. One valuable way to discover how to draw on your natural resilience to meet the challenges of life is to participate in psychotherapy. Therapy is an active partnership - where both people are listening and exploring, investigating and discovering those parts of your life that are causing suffering and difficulties - and then finding the ways to heal those places.

There are moments or situations in our lives that affect us in powerful ways. Therapy offers an opportunity to talk about ourselves in a way that allows us to figure out, explore and cope with that which is distressing, painful and makes us suffer. Why are things not going my way? Why I’m feeling so anxious. Why do the same things keep happening to me? What should I do to not feel sad, depressed and unmotivated? Is this what I want in life?

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
