I specialize in Mental Health issues such as Anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, Depression, bipolar disorder, other mood disorders, as well as personality disorders.
Maybe you can identify with some of the things I have been through which played a part in my decision to become a Clinical Therapist. Middle class & Brooklyn born, I had experienced many adverse situations in my life, which began growing up in a dysfunctional home. A dysfunctional home life is much like an Alcoholic home life, however, without the alcohol. If you experienced dysfunction growing up, it is the main ingredient that qualifies the entire family to seek therapy at some point in their life. When dysfunction causes the brain to rewire, we now have Mental Illness at play.

I have vast clinical experience treating depression, anxiety, personality disorders, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia, as well as everyday neurosis and life adjustments.
In the broadest terms, my practice centers on the idea of helping you to establish or restore greater authenticity--a more authentic voice, space of desire and trajectory of drive/motivation. This can be addressed through more short-term approaches that focus primarily on the present, or a deeper approach that considers and works through past experiences as they inevitably impact the present in ways not always available to consciousness. By uncovering these occluded forces left over from the past and lingering in the present, you will be able to develop broader insight and live more fully with greater intention.

My expertise is helping adults with chronic anxiety and/or depression, and/or grief feel better. My clients are adults who are competent and skilled in many ways, but not in healing their own spiraling fears and emotional pain. With investment in the therapy process, my clients learn to quiet self-criticism, and calm themselves when distressed. They feel more competent in relationship, and they navigate conflicts more skillfully. Daily life is more satisfying. They value themselves and honor what they bring to the world. They feel more hopeful about their future - even if it's not the future they once imagined for themselves.

It’s a tough world — many of us suffer from anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship struggles and mood disorders. It’s important to realize that you’re not alone. Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of patients struggling with many of these common issues. The good news is, there’s hope. I take an engaging approach to helping you understand the reality of your situation, and empower you to overcome the present to become the best version of yourself. I received my graduate degree from Columbia University, and trained/worked at the prestigious American Institute for Psychoanalysis.

By creating an open, trusting and collaborative partnership, I can help you to make conscious choices and practical behavioral changes that facilitate improved self-esteem; relieve anxiety, depression and social problems; change self-defeating patterns; overcome fears of intimacy and enhance the quality of relationships.
Choosing a therapist can seem like a daunting task. I believe the most important element of my job is to create a safe, nonjudgemental environment that helps you to explore feelings, history and conflicts. If I accomplish this task, you will be able to achieve a new level of understanding and resolution. It has been my good fortune to experience the personal growth of my clients throughout my many years of practice. I hope to engage in this type of relationship with you.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
