I have extensive training and experience helping clients who are dealing with relationship/intimacy issues; addictions; depression and anxiety; grief and loss; communication difficulties; trauma and PTSD; child/adolescent issues and divorce.
With 25 years in clinical practice, I am a firm believer in the effectiveness of psychotherapy to improve self confidence and self esteem, to develop more fulfilling relationships and to set one's life course in a positive direction for the future. I try to not only help my clients find relief from bothersome symptoms but also to help get to the root of the problem that has brought them into therapy. In this way the therapy has a deeper and longer-lasting effect as clients learn how to free themselves from problematic patterns from the past and live more fully in the present.

Struggling with trauma, depression, and anxiety? These are treatable conditions! With effective EMDR treatment, we can relieve your pain and foster integrative experiences. As your therapist, I'll challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and focus on healing (EMDR therapists call it "adaptive resolution") beyond intellectual understanding. Together, we'll create a treatment plan with a beginning, middle, and end, ensuring long-lasting transformative changes. My specialty in EMDR has been helpful to many of my clients, including those who believed that they were untreatable.

I specialize in working with relationship problems, identity development, shame and confidence, trauma, anxiety, and depression.
You may have learned that sweeping challenges under the rug was a reasonable way of dealing with uncomfortable feelings, like sadness, loneliness, and shame. And yet, while you may feel better at first, you couldn’t help but notice that the same feelings emerge again and again. If you are in a committed relationship, you may feel exhausted noticing that the same conflicts recur with your partner(s), leading to frustration or apathy. These issues can cause you to have a difficult time trusting yourself and your intuition, leave you feeling disconnected, and make you question how to move forward to create a life with more purpose.

I have extensive experience treating eating disorders and also work with general mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and life transitions.
I am passionate about helping others identify and build on strengths to live authentic, meaningful lives. I believe the therapeutic relationship is collaborative process in which you can safely explore and make sense of your inner most world. It is through this understanding that we begin to recognize and process patterns that no longer serve us and make small shifts towards rewriting our own stories.

Each of us has the ability to impact the world in a unique and powerful way and we are all born with the desire to deeply connect with others. Struggles with anxiety, depression, insecurity, burnout and stress can discourage us and keep us from realizing our full potential. Counseling gives you the opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood as well as challenged. It is through therapy that we come to understand ourselves more fully allowing personal growth, self esteem and possibly true satisfaction with the life we are given.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
