I have experience working with children, teens, families and young adults around trauma, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. It's not uncommon to seek therapy when feeling overwhelmed with stress, struggling in a relationship, or experiencing strong negative emotions or thoughts. Wanting to "feel better" without understanding just how a therapist is supposed to help, isn't unusual either. During our initial consultation we'll dicuss what you're hoping to get out of therapy; I'll then provide information on how I might use my training, skills, and experience, to help you move forward in the best way possible.

In this time of crisis, perhaps you, like so many, are experiencing increased anxiety and/or depression, or are experiencing strained relationships. Or perhaps old dysfunctional coping habits have worsened under current circumstances. Whatever you are dealing with, I will guide you through a process that will lead to more emotional control, more connectedness and more self compassion. I do follow the tenet that "life must be understood backwards, but lived forwards" (Soren Kierkegaard). We will work with current issues with the focus on improved well being, but will examine past patterns to help guide our work forward.

As a clinician I focus on serving adolescents, college students, and young adults going through life stage transitions, and who may be experiencing anxiety, depression, guilt, or shame.
Healing isn't always linear. Sometimes you may feel like you're taking two steps forward and one back, or bouncing between stages of grief or anger. I believe it is important to honor your emotions and experiences, and prioritize the things in your life that bring you joy, fulfillment, and purpose. I use a strengths-based, holistic approach to treatment, and emphasize providing culturally congruent care that is aligned with a client's unique identities and background. I believe in creating a safe and contained space to help clients live more authentically and in a way that fits with their values.

I have extensive experience in helping clients with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and issues of identity.
The decision to start therapy can be intensely personal when the sum of your experiences messages to you that nothing can, or will change. Therapy isn't just a space where we develop insight into how we got to where we are, but a space that we take to consider who we want to move forward into becoming. You make sense in context, and it's in that context that we'll work together to support you in overcoming barriers to becoming the version of yourself you strive to be.

In addition to working as a therapist, I have written about long-term success for couples and workplace stress and have led therapy groups on these topics as well as anxiety and depression.
I became a therapist after working for many years in business and finance. I was fortunate to then complete a master's and subsequently a doctoral program in Psychology. This professional and academic experience supports the therapy I've been providing for over a decade. By connecting academic theories with my clients' real-life situations and an empathic and thoughtful style, I seek to help clients understand themselves better while supporting their movement forward in positive directions.

I support members of the BIPOC and APIDA community with individual teletherapy for issues on anxiety, depression, grief, racism, ethnic identity formation, and substance use.
My clients are high-achieving creatives or in the tech industry, working for companies such as Meta, Google, Tesla, etc… I make an effort to create a strong therapeutic relationship in a safe, encouraging and supportive environment. From that foundation we might process difficult experiences and establish healthier ways of coping based in mindfulness practices. My clients typically leave sessions feeling a greater sense of freedom with more possible choices in front of them. They are able to access their own inner wisdom, achieving a better understanding of who they are and a clearer direction in where they wish to lead their lives.

Hi there, I'm Dr. Aaron Rosales and I'm here to help you reconnect to a sense of vitality—a life rich with meaning and purpose. I know that working toward a better tomorrow and a better you is tough because I'm also one of those idealists who has come face to face with the painful realities of a difficult world. But hope is not extinguished. Working with me will help you re-kindle that sense of alive-ness in all that you do...letting anxiety, depression, and all those other burdens we carry fade.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
