I have experience working with depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions, relationship issues, self-wellness, South Asian families and the bi-cultural pressures, children of divorce and various teen concerns.
I engage with each person as an individual that requires a unique set of skills specifically altered to address your personal sources of distress. I offer a safe, non-judgmental, compassionate and supportive environment so that you can create the change you are seeking. There are times in our lives when we struggle with the most valuable relationships in our lives. It helps to be able to reflect together, problem-solve toward solutions and ways of coping with someone who can remain objective and supportive. I believe a strong therapeutic relationship is important in order to grow in therapy.

I view psychotherapy as a joint venture in which we work collaboratively to reach your goals. My style is direct, transparent and positive, warm, interactive and nonjudgemental. I create the safety needed within our relationship to allow us to explore the issues that underlie depression, anxiety, loneliness, lack of fulfillment and other concerns. As a therapist I follow your lead. With over two decades of experience I work diligently to understand each individual, employing elements of psychoanalytic, mindfulness and cognitive behavioral theories to create an approach that best suits the unique individual with whom I am working.

I work with a wide range of populations and specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, and distressful life transitions. I am a firm believer that in order to achieve overall wellness, one must place priority on creating a life that feels good on the inside rather than a life that appears good from the outside. The wider the discrepancy between the two, the greater the distress from emotional pain.

Some common reasons people come into therapy with me are: dissatisfaction with life and relationships, feeling isolated and alone, anger, patterns of co-dependence or care taking, drug abuse and addiction (computers included), desire to find purpose in life and step into power, feelings of self-judgment, anxiety and depression.
Stepping into therapy with someone is an inherently risky process. You are courageously opening up to someone that you don't really know, in hopes of changing, of finding something new, of building a relationship that can create positive change. I respect those who take the leap and I get the importance that you find the right therapist so that you can be understood at a deep level and begin looking more closely at the places in your life that you would like to see change.

I am a psychotherapist with offices in SF and Oakland, where I treat both adults and couples. I take a relational and collaborative approach to psychotherapy. We are all unique, consciously and unconsciously influenced by the relationships and life-events that leave a lasting impact on how we address our current situation. Difficulties can sometimes arise when the habitual thoughts, emotions, or behaviors that once served us now have us feeling stuck, depressed, and powerless. Fear, ambivalence, compulsivity and patterned thinking can hamper our ability to address the inevitable twists and turns of daily life.

I’ve worked with many young professionals to develop tools for when they are struggling to balance the challenges of the workforce while facing issues stemming from depression, anxiety, stress, previous trauma, and relationship issues.
Hi, I’m Kim, and I am honored to be a catalyst to healing and change in your life. Everyone’s story is unique and challenging in it’s own way. I believe life is a journey of learning how to be your best self, and this is not always easy. You must be brave. Sometimes we need support in learning how to learn about ourselves. I believe therapy can be an effective tool for gaining insight into who you are now, who you want to become, and how to get there.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
