Anxiety, trauma, and depression can get us into a funk. Together we will find tools to help you manage and decrease anxiety, heal from past trauma, and soften the heaviness of depression. Research shows that it is primarily the relationship you build with your therapist that has the greatest effect on whether you will reach your therapeutic goals. My aim is to build that relationship with you, to help you move toward the life you want to live.

I have worked with various ages and issues, including depression, anxiety, and trauma. My counseling style is warm, empathic, and genuine. My approach is primarily cognitive-behavioral and humanistic. I believe that in many instances, our thought patterns directly affect our emotions and, subsequently, our behavior. I come from a viewpoint that you are the expert of you. No one knows you better than you! I look at myself as a guide and allow my clients to dictate the course and direction of counseling.

I'm trained in attachment, relationships, grief/loss, anxiety, depression & trauma.
Do you spend a lot of time wondering how you got to this point? You haven’t been yourself; maybe others have noticed. You want your life back but the road seems so hard. You might feel all alone. When you find yourself here the important things can start to fall apart like relationships with the ones you love. Or perhaps it's a relationship problem that started the downward spiral. In these hard places you need to be seen and understood by someone. Learning coping strategies and positive self-talk can only take you so far. You deserve therapy that leads to healing and wholeness helping you become the best version of yourself.

Anxiety, depression, trauma, or any lived experience can leave us stressed, overwhelmed, or feeling trapped. Living daily life with confidence in the decisions we make, setting boundaries with the people around us, and feeling in control of ourselves can be an empowering experience. Overcoming the negative things we experience is also something that can be gained through therapy. Change is always possible.

Waitlist for new clients
I work with children, teens, and adults and have specialties in working with grief, loss, and those facing life-limiting illnesses as well as those struggling with depression, anxiety, and the effects of trauma.
Whether you are struggling with a life change (life-limiting diagnosis, divorce, a new phase of life), a loss (death, a relationship, job, sense of your own independence), feeling stuck (life isn't moving in the direction you had hoped, you want to feel different but just don't know where to start), or you are in pain (physical or emotional), I can be a non-biased sounding board and guide. I like to meet my clients "right where they are" and help you with tools to move in the direction you wish to be. I'm easy to talk to, not afraid to talk about hard things, and mix in my own "humanness" with a dose of humor in our sessions.

I have 19 years of experience utilizing different types of therapies to address the following: Anxiety, Depression, Relationship Problems, Self-Harm or Thoughts of Self-Harm, Feelings of Overall Discontentment, Fear of the Future, Work/School Problems, Childhood Traumas, Unhealthy Patterns and/or Thoughts that lead to undesired results.
It is natural to experience pain as well as joy during life. It is not, however, natural to remain in a state of suffering. I believe we are meant to live happy, joyful lives within a background of inner peace. Sometimes life's circumstances throw us off balance and professional help is needed to find our way back. That's what I do, that's my purpose, to help others regain, or possibly even discover for the first time that life is not to be feared or dreaded because of hurtful emotions.

Common areas I address with children and their families are anxiety, depression, life changes, trauma, anger and behavioral issues.
I believe teamwork is best; I cannot work harder than the client or family is willing to work. The ideal client is open to discovering underlying issues, possible problematic thinking patterns, along with personal strengths to help cope with their needs. A client who understands my role is not to judge them but support them; that making suggestions or observations to increase their self-awareness is part of our working relationship. Honesty from the client allows me to fully understand where they are in their life and the best approach for me to take in offering support.

We've worked together through anxiety, depression, and trauma.
I believe everyone who walks into my office matters and I am honored for the chance to walk alongside them and hear their story. I use a Cognitive Behavioral approach to help my clients identify areas where negative thoughts and beliefs have taken root and equip them to replace those beliefs with truth in a way that allows them to move forward as their healthiest self.

Our journey through life is not always easy. You may feel alone, depressed, frustrated, worried, angry, or perhaps a recent or past trauma has left you feeling vulnerable. Life is far too short to be unhappy. I am passionate about helping individuals, couples, and families move forward into the life they want to live.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
