I have assisted individuals in all walks of life for over 17 years through issues ranging from trauma, depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders and many others.
Life can be hard; there are times when we all need a little help with life’s problems and challenges. Taking the step to see a therapist can be like opening a new door. I have a deep respect for the individual human spirit and a true belief in the therapeutic relationship as a means of creating change. I simply want to help anyone who wants to be helped.

I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, marriage & family; & am certified in DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing).
Clients who are struggling but wanting to not only heal, but also grow have the potential for being extremely powerful people. We have all gone through difficult times, experiencing anxiety, fear, depression, and hopelessness. However, if we have healed, we look back and see those times as hard, but some of the most powerful in our lives. Hearts can become strong, marriages can be healed and become euphoric, and our families can become strong, powerful, and beautiful. If you have a Christian background, I can help you become stronger in your faith. If you want to become a stronger leader, I am also an executive coach.

Have you ever wished life was different? Often, people go through life pretending things are “ok.” In reality, everyone experiences problems. Often, we are afraid to share them with others. We're afraid of their response. You don't have to do it alone anymore. No matter the problem you are facing... depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness... I believe together we can take steps to create a better life for you. I believe big changes are made by taking small, consistent steps. I believe a strong, collaborative, therapeutic relationship helps those I work with to explore what is holding them back, while we work toward change.

I am Dr. Datonna Higgins and I am so glad you are here! I learned long ago that time does not heal us in and of itself, but rather it's what we do with that time that makes all of the difference. Whether navigating a difficult life transition, loss, relationship struggles, or trying to manage symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, or addiction...now will always be the perfect time to start or continue on your journey to healing. Quality and personable mental health treatment should be easily accessible to all, which is why I strive to provide virtual counseling with an in-person feel. Distance counseling should not feel distant!

Since our society has shifted into a high tech world, text and email communication has dominated. Communication (TALKING to and with one another) has suffered. Real consequences include an epidemic OF lonliness among all age groups. Anxiety and depression are not uncommon and medications to treat those symtoms have shot out of the roof. Marital distress and divorce rates and have risen alarmingly. Suicide rates also. Communication of our needs and feelings often aren't expressed at all, or in ways that do not result in understanding and resolutions. With no resolution comes isolation.

My specialties are in the treatment of anxiety, trauma and depression.
Have you ever felt like no matter what you do you just cannot get to a place of peace? Often, the hardest part of managing mental health is learning to live after you survived whatever caused pain in the first place. It's easier to expect the worst than hope for the best when you've been through trauma. I'm here to help my people identify self-limiting beliefs and unwanted behavior. We find the root of the problem, and begin to re-process negative belief systems then replace those with healthier views. It may seem impossible, but with the right approach I believe everyone can find joy.

Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives.
We believe the only means to having long-lasting treatment outcomes is by providing holistic services which treat the whole person, Soul, Body and Spirit. We believe strong individuals produce strong families, strong families produce strong communities, strong communities produce strong cities, and strong cities produce a strong nation. We believe in order for treatment or services to be effective, clients/customers must be fully committed to the process and must take responsibility for bringing about positive change in their lives and/or communities.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
