"You have cancer, heart disease" or any serious medical condition, are often the most frightening words a person can hear. The initial shock gives way to fear, anxiety, feeling out of control, sadness or depression. I utilize evidenced based therapies to teach methods for reducing the distress associated with illness. I am also certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), a powerful psychotherapy for healing the effects of medical and general trauma associated with highly disturbing events.
Fear of recurrence and memories of painful or frightening procedures can remain after treatments have stopped. Utilizing mindfulness, relaxation and stress management techniques anxiety gives way to calm and negativity to realistic optimism. I assist clients to live with hope, purpose and empowerment in spite of uncertainty about the future.
For me, participating in the healing journey of my clients is a calling not just a career. Illness and unforeseen tragedies befall many of us. Learning to navigate these events can make the difference between a meaningful, fulfilling life or a life lived in defeat.
