I believe that much of our suffering begins with a lost connection. When we're depressed, we've lost touch with our own vitality, even our own reasons for living. When we're grieving, we've lost an essential part of our world--and, with it, a part of ourselves. When we're operating from a place of shame or fear, we've lost the internal sense of security and belonging that reminds us we're okay. I believe that psychotherapy works by restoring these vital connections--to ourselves, and to the people and pursuits that give our lives meaning--so that we can live our lives more authentically, creatively, and fully.

The desire to be connected to others is innate, and yet we sometimes find ourselves alone, hopeless, sad, scared, and angry. I believe that being connected to ourselves and others is part of the human experience, and recovery from symptoms that interrupt our ability to live our lives to the fullest is possible. I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals who struggle with issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction. I believe change and insight are possible, and freedom from pain and suffering is attainable.

I assume serious intent to address whatever brought the patient to my office in the first place. It is my hope to form the most positive therapeutic alliance possible. The first step is to acknowledge the courage it took to make the call. I have been practicing as a licensed Clinical Psychologist for thirty years. I have also served as a faculty member at the University of Colorado Boulder for over twenty years. I mostly see chronic depressed and anxious patients I .have worked across the spectrum from imminently suicidial to the broader existential issues concerning a more meaningful life.

It takes courage to ask for help; you have already taken the first step. Life throws us situations we don't anticipate or have encountered before and we need help getting through. You are here because you or someone you care about is in pain. You have come to the right place. We have all had those times when we need someone besides family and friends to talk to. People come to me for a variety of reasons: anxiety and depression, relationship problems, family issues, emotional and social struggles, rebuilding self-esteem, teen difficulties, general life transitions, and personal growth.

We often seek therapy when we're ready for change and part of our life has become unbalanced. A feeling of discontent, depression, or anxiety may have lasted a lifetime, or may have been initiated by a transitional change, such as loss of a relationship or career, or a yearning to grow beyond where we have been stuck.

Our capacity to connect, both with ourselves (i.e. our passions, feelings, and body) and with others, is crucial to our feelings of well-being. When we connect, we generally feel a sense of aliveness in ourselves and the world. When we can't connect, we feel anxious, isolated, empty, or depressed. I feel my job is to help clients to more fully connect to the range of their experiences. I help adults and adolescents explore why they lose connection. I help them identify, understand, and overcome the deep root of their disconnection. I help them find well-being, which gives me great joy.

I specialize in working with adult clients who deal with attachment issues, depression, trauma, anger, anxiety, grief/loss, and relationship issues.
Starting an inner journey on a path to self-healing and understanding can seem like a daunting task. It can be confusing, often goes against logic, and opens us up to the very things that caused us to retreat from a full life in the first place. I understand the trepidation that comes from starting on such a journey and the various obstacles that arise during this exploration. This journey does not have to be taken alone.

Early in life we learn to disconnect from our bodies and emotions in order to survive and adapt to the environment. Overtime, this manifests as patterns of behavior and self-rejection that though were once adaptive, now only keep us stuck. These patterns typically manifest as anxiety, depression, self-hatred, toxic shame, addictions, obsessions, compulsions, codependency and relationship problems. I work experientially in the moment to get to the root of what is getting in the way of desired experiences on an identity level. Many clients describe this process as a gradual “coming home” or reconnection to their authentic self.

In this age of narcissism and self-discovery, many are feeling isolated and alienated from others, causing us to reassess our relationships and personal choices. Many are disillusioned, anxious and depressed due to unwanted life experiences that threaten our sense of security and block our path to happiness. During this time of cultural and personal insecurity, some seek a space for guided reflection, discovery and contemplation of possibilities previously unconsidered. I provide services that promote healthy outcomes and empower clients to make authentic, self-directed changes that align with personal needs, values and aspirations.

Transitions are, by their very nature, difficult. Adjusting to any life change requires continued growth, self-development and a balance between one's inner strength and external resources. I assist adults (as well as senior citizens) to create a meaningful existence in the social and environmental contexts of their lives. I use cognitive behavioral methods to help my clients successfully cope with a broad spectrum of stressors and personal life challenges related to major life events--career change, retirement, divorce or the death of a loved one.

You're in the right place. Maybe things aren't working and you're looking for change...maybe you don't know what it is, but something needs to be different. You're wanting to feel understood and supported. Sometimes struggles and issues may be clear as day while at other times feel ambigous, uncertain, and ongoing. If you're looking for change, connection, and understanding, let's connect.

My work rests on a profound respect for the human capacity to change and a deep appreciation of the impact of emotional pain on both mind and body. Indeed, I view many “symptoms” as creative attempts to cope under stress. This perspective emerged from 30+ years in practice, formal training, work at psychiatric hospitals and other facilities, experience as a supervisor and a teacher, and lived experience. Whereas my specific approach is individualized, my overall orientation privileges the relationship between therapist and client as a force for change and a window into other relationships, both historical and contemporary.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
