Having had meaningful therapy experiences myself, I know what a difference it can make. I work primarily with teens and young adults and find myself connecting strongly to those who are extra hard on themselves. This may include individuals grappling with challenges such as feelings of depression and/or anxiety, tendencies towards people-pleasing and/or perfectionism, and self-critical beliefs. I also work with many client’s who are seeking a better understanding of why they feel the way they do and who are searching for further insight into who they are in this often chaotic world.

Individuals I have worked with experienced less anxiety and depression, developed ways to manage and cope with big feelings, and reported greater connection to themselves and others.
Is your child or teen struggling with making sense of their emotions? Are they struggling with their relationships? Grappling with their identity and self-esteem? I may be able to help! I am a licensed National Board Certified Counselor (NBCC) and Registered Play Therapist (RPT).

My areas of work include loss and grief, trauma/PTSD, depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, parenting, and conflict resolution.
Congratulations on taking the first step in starting therapy. For over 20 years, I've enjoyed collaborating with adults, teens and their families to resolve conflicts, and foster more meaningful relationships. Anxiety and depression can cloud our ability to see ourselves and others in a positive light. Together we can challenge negative thinking that blocks goal attainment, regulate overwhelming emotions, and calm the body. In a safe environment we can explore new ways of thinking and being. I look forward to joining you on your journey

I work with a wide range of clientele, including those dealing with women's and/or men's issues, life transitions, anxiety, depression, body image issues/self-love, adverse childhood experiences, and others.
I naturally work from a strengths-based, client-centered perspective and feel that collaboration and rapport are key components in the therapeutic process. My goal is to help clients heal and flourish in their lives. Through deeper emotional exploration, things that seem to keep getting us "stuck" can be examined and worked through, resulting in true healing and change. In our sessions, I work with my clients in exploring thoughts, emotions, experiences, relationships, behaviors, etc. and together we work towards a healthier and happier life.

I am a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with clients. My work is based upon my belief that human beings are inherently good and yet all too often adopt limiting belief systems and habitual behavioral patterns which keep us from realizing our true nature. I work with clients who wish to regain their balance and integrity and assist them in learning how to live the lives they intuitively know they are meant to live. Clients often present with depression, anxiety and/or relationship difficulties and seek to feel better and sustain more on-going joy, love, and harmony in their lives.

I have experience working with people that suffer from depression, anxiety, trauma and have difficulty in social situations or uncomfortable environments (school, home, etc).
I assist people going through difficult life changes that need to talk through any troubling emotions or feelings that may be causing them distress. I help people realize their power in various environments they may be having a difficult time in (Work, Home, Relationships, etc). My typical client is an adult (LGBTQIA+ friendly) that wants to work on understanding and conquering their fears, difficult situations impeding their life and gaining a better understanding of themselves.

Depression is often overwhelming. It drains us of our energy, makes the world seem bleak and hopeless, and removes the pleasure, joy, and meaning from life. When we are depressed simple things are difficult, like getting out of bed, going to work, or simply being with others. Depression erodes our self-esteem and we often end up disliking ourselves and others, and we just want to hide away. Often these symptoms of depression cause even more depression – our withdrawal into ourselves leads to performance difficulties at school and work, and it isolates us from the very people we love and who love us.

I enjoy working primarily in the areas of depression, anxiety, life transitions, self-esteem, and relationship concerns.
Therapy provides the unique opportunity for you to adventure into and openly investigate your internal world. Emotional transformations can be akin to wading into the ocean or navigating a new trail in the forest. While these pursuits are exciting, they can also be intimidating, challenging, or frustrating at times. I view my role as your co-pilot; helping you to navigate what it is that brings you to therapy with the goal of unleashing your innate strengths and ability to overcome. I do so with a genuine curiosity and openness, integrating my training in mindfulness and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.

Contacting a therapist is a first courageous step toward: a) understanding yourself and making healthier choices; b) creating more loving relationships while handling conflict positively; and c) empowering yourself to work through symptoms (such as depression or anxiety) that keep you "stuck" – just waiting for your life to get going.
Are you at a crossroads in life? Maybe your job or relationship is not where it should be. Or are you new to the area or back on the dating market? I can help you navigate change to discover meaning and happiness in work and relationships. I start by honoring the strengths you already have, while you develop lost or hidden aspects of your self. My approach emphasizes the connections between your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being – including the value of a good sense of humor. I will collaborate with you to develop an individualized treatment plan.

Both can help loosen the grip of depression and anxiety and make us more alive to life's possibilities.
Sometimes we don’t understand the feelings coming up in us. The world can be unjust and hard, and things happen that make it tough to trust ourselves or others, don’t they? Sometimes we wonder if we'll always feel lonely. We might ask why our relationships turn out the way they do, or why we try the same things over and over. When we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop or when life feels muddled or grey, we can wonder if this is all there is.

Throughout my work, it has become clear that the mind is amazing at convincing us of our worst fears and we can often turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms that may heighten already negative feelings. These experiences can be intense and opening up can bring its own set of challenges. It has been a real privilege to support people in navigating their emotional experiences relating to anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationships, and trauma. I take a mindful approach to my practice and place significant emphasis on the relationship we build.

One of the deepest forms of suffering we create for ourselves is believing, “Something is wrong with me.” Chronic self-judgment, depression, anxiety, and shame can make it challenging to live with balance and purpose. Suffering is often worsened by isolation and disconnection from our emotional pain. Feelings of inadequacy make it difficult to be at home in our own body, heart, and mind, and keep us from living and loving life fully. Often, the first step toward healing is a trusting, respectful, non-judgmental, and caring therapy relationship.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
