I have helped individuals address concerns including but not limited to: situational stress, adjustment to life changes, depression, anxiety, abuse (emotional, physical, sexual), trauma, relationship difficulties, family concerns, marital/partner conflicts, parenting and life skills.
Sometimes life's challenges become unmanageable and we need someone to help us navigate until we can once again find our way. Whether you are having difficulty in relationships, adjusting to life changes, struggling with depression or anxious feeling, or can't take care of life's daily activities the way you'd like to, therapy can help. I hope to create a comfortable, safe and confidential environment where you feel understood and accepted. I will help you explore your life stressors and create an environment to help you look at your concerns from an unbiased perspective, helping you to find your unique path.

I have provided psychotherapy to adults experiencing depression, anxiety, grief/loss, family difficulties, and academic struggles, and prefer to take a collaborative approach specific to any concerns that you might have.
As a clinical psychologist specializing in relationship difficulties, I have worked with many individuals who struggle with conflict in their intimate relationships, experience fears about closeness or intimacy, feel anxiety about relating to others, and those who have trouble feeling generally satisfied in their relationships. I believe that dissatisfying relationships contribute to emotional stress and pain, and that promoting stronger, healthier relationships can lead to people experiencing happier and more productive lives. I work with individuals to explore these struggles and develop understanding or insight about their patterns in relationships, with the ultimate goal of helping people have a different experience in their current relationships.

We all experience, loss, trauma, anxiety, depression or life transitions at some point in our lives, but we do not have to go through these challenges alone. I would like to help you work through these challenges in a caring safe environment. I sincerely enjoy listening to people, and learning their story. I work to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for my clients. I view challenges from a Humanistic Orientation, however, am able to adapt to my clients' needs regarding how they like to conceptualize the world around them, and how they respond best to solutions to move them forward.

When a person is struggling, I look at the big picture, not just "problems" or "symptoms." Through a strengths-based perspective, I try to see how the problem areas came to be, formulate a plan to address concerns, and actively teach skills to foster change. Through this lens, I have successfully worked with kids (as young as 5), teens, and young adults to address depression, anxiety, self-harm, OCD, ADHD, and other behavioral and emotional disturbances.

I believe that the value of therapy rests in the inherent promise it offers to help you to become your best self. I strive to see you as a whole person - appreciating that many things shape who you are such as your physical health, your spiritual beliefs and the relationships you have. My primary goal is to help you cultivate the life you desire by assisting you to articulate the problems that you are having - now and in the past - and identify practical solutions you can apply to feel better now and over time.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
