Congratulations on your decision to seek help for your emotional wellbeing! I see mental health therapy as an opportunity for growth. I am committed to helping my clients achieve their goals by providing a partnership that facilitates deeper awareness, leading to a new sense of empowerment and change. Many of the people I work with are experiencing relationship difficulties, life transitions, feelings of anxiety and depression, previous trauma, and loss.
As an art therapist, my passion lies in helping people heal through the creative process. This approach can help you to gain insight into your life and make meaning of your experiences. Expressive arts can also promote calming, stress-reduction, increased focus, release of energy, conflict resolution, increased self-esteem, and increased self-awareness.
Eye-opening, Challenging, Supportive, Life-changing: These are words clients have used to describe our therapy work together. Many of the individuals with whom I work are experiencing relationship difficulties, life transitions, feelings of anxiety and depression, previous trauma, and loss. I strive to help people gain increased awareness, learn to live more in the present, improve their relationships, and recognize the "shoulds" and other messages that are holding them back from experiencing a more fulfilling life. As a Gestalt-trained Therapist, I see "symptoms" as creative adjustments developed in response to difficult or invalidating environments and experiences.
Guiding my work is the belief that life is precious, and that learning to live more fully in the present relieves suffering. I will work with you confidentially. I will expertly help you manage extreme stress, discover strengths, and change patterns getting in the way of health and happiness. I work actively and collaboratively, and am eager to help adults struggling with a whole range of problems including: anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and confidence, abuse and trauma, relationship issues, separation/divorce, personality issues, severe illness, or substance abuse.
Do you repeat yourself constantly and nothing changes? Does your child battle big feelings or behaviors and you don't know what to do anymore? You're not alone! It's time to take your family back! Behavior is the best way children can "tell" us something isn't right. And I'm trained to help you both understand the "code". But therapy shouldn't be forever. I support you in supporting them, so they can then learn how to support themselves. We do this together by identifying the problems, creating a plan, and following it so you can finally do it without support. Like riding a bicycle- one pedal at a time.
It is a gift to have someone share their emotional self, and an honor to accompany them on their journey of growth. This statement summarizes my approach to practicing mental health counseling for the last 30 years. Entering counseling takes courage and the strength to be vulnerable; my goal is to help harness this courage to facilitate growth and encourage healthy change. Change is often scary and is greeted by resistance, so an environment must be provided which will enhance therapeutic success. I believe that prescribing to one therapeutic approach limits the client's progress, remembering their unique life experiences.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist, based in Media, PA and Wilmington, DE. I have treated individuals, couples and families for 25 years, and have supervised other therapists. I believe that it is the relationships we have with each other that determine our peace of mind and quality of life. It is through relating more clearly with each other that we can improve our lives. I also offer group therapy for men.
No one teaches us how to handle the setbacks of life. Whether they be personal, family, career, or interpersonal. Sometimes problems can feel like a tremendous burden. In fact, obstacles are often pathways to reach a higher understanding of ourselves and how we fit into the larger scheme of things. Freedom from fear, worry, anxiety, depression, and sleepless nights arrives with the acceptance of non-perfection. We are all human and fallible, born to make mistakes. In a world of judgements and comparisons we need to treat ourselves and others with respect and compassion. "Be yourself..everyone else is taken".
Making it to the top of the mountain always begins with the first step. Needless to say, if you have already made it this far, you are well on your way. If you are ready, allow for me to go with you on your journey. Whether it is depression, anxiety, behavior issues or anger management, learning how to manage and overcome is so important and I am willing to take the steps along with you.
Does this sound like a familiar experience to you? You are a Black woman in your late 20s or older and you notice that you feel overwhelmed and disconnected from yourself. You are often focused on taking care of others, whether that be your family, children, significant other, or friends, and don't feel like you have time for yourself. There is a desire to learn more about what you truly want and need and how to communicate this to those around you, but you aren't sure where to begin. As a Black woman, you're also navigating what it means to challenge the “strong Black woman” identity and see yourself as more than just resilient.
I am a Licensed Therapist in Delaware and Maryland with over 25 years of experience. Life can be challenging and overwhelming, however, we are all capable of growth, change, and learning from our experiences.
*Accepting New Clients Hi, I'm Cheryl! I am so glad you are here. As women, we are charged with the expectation that we are going to be committed wives, involved mothers, parent caregivers, and successful in our careers. In an attempt to "have it all", we put our own lives and well being on hold. Together, we will explore your past and uncover what has inspired you and what has held you back. We will identify your passions and rewrite your story to be the one you have always dreamed of.
Change can be difficult. Especially when you have experienced mental or emotional suffering for months or years. Believing that things can change can be even more difficult, however, change is possible. With counseling, faith, and using your own personal strengths, all things are possible, even experiencing peace. Sometimes experiencing peace may mean that the situation has not gone away or even changed much but the way you think, react, cope, or respond to the situation no longer brings you turmoil. Change can begin in you and with you when you allow us to work together to bring a healing process to your life right now.
We are BCBA's with a practice limited to ABA Therapy for children with Autism and other Developmental Disorders. We received our BCBA's in 2004 (Donna) and 2005 (myself), expanding on our knowledge/experience in School Psychology and Special Education Supervision. There is a great need for experienced clinicians to serve clients at home and in school/community with Skinner's Analysis of Verbal Behavior, solid contingency management and well-supervised practice of professional behavior therapists. Parents want to see improvement in daily functioning and growth, as this has a direct connection to their future independence.
With empathy and understanding I create a safe, caring and comfortable therapeutic environment for you and I to explore difficult emotions, experiences, situations, and for you to share your concerns and feel heard. Together we will create a space for you to achieve the growth, change or acceptance you seek. I am experienced and hold specific training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive behavior Therapy, Behavior activation, and Certified Trauma Treatment.
My approach to therapy is to be mindful of the individual and what they may need. Each person is unique. I believe my education, training and experience are important and influence how I conceptualize therapy. However, in the end it comes down to making a connection and doing the work. I am focused on meeting my client's treatment goals as they present themselves, as they evolve and as they conclude. I respect the journey. I honor the individuals who have allowed me to walk with them.
