Clients seek me out when they are angry, sad, and anxious. Many of them do not know how to set boundaries with others. They often learned to be people pleasers at a young age. Clients often say that they feel guilty saying "no" but resentful when they always say "yes". I work with clients to help them develop self-esteem, and to see their positive qualities. I teach clients how to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively so that others won't become defensive and will actually listen to them.
Many clients grew up in homes in which communication was loud, angry, and disrespectful. As a result, they don't know how to do things differently. My specialty is teaching clients to pay attention to volume, tone, words, and even facial expressions. They are pleasantly surprised that what they learn has a positive effect on their communication with others.
I know first-hand how difficult it can be to start therapy. Although I am a trained therapist, growing up as a Latina in a military family with traditional values made me very hesitant to begin my own therapy journey. I truly believe that we all have the strength within us to conquer our fears and achieve our goals.
