Life’s challenges can allow one to believe that their situations are unique to them. Mental illness, addiction, stress, grief, and relationship struggles touch the lives of individuals on a daily basis. As women, we tend to believe that we can carry the weight of the world, but meanwhile, we're struggling on the inside. Are you not feeling like yourself and wondering what happened to the "old" you who used to enjoy life? Perhaps you're struggling with a relationship that isn't bringing you the joy it once did, or maybe it's the struggles of parenting. Are you questioning who you are or what's your purpose?

I believe in our ability to change, grow, and live truly inspired lives. It can be so hard to find yourself feeling overwhelmed, anxious, worried, & unable to manage your emotions. You start to feel helpless and out of control. Or maybe, you are highly critical of yourself...and sometimes others. You constantly compare yourself to others and usually fall short. You just can't seem to quiet that negative voice in your head. It seems to have taken over and it's causing problems in many areas of your life. At its worst, it even affects your relationships with those you hold most dear.

This rollercoaster of life can feel more scary than exciting. This can make life feel distressing and dizzying, instead of enjoyable or fun. Having someone to help during the downs, and cheering during the ups can make such a difference. Whether you're looking for yourself or your child, as a therapist, my role is to support during growth or setbacks, challenge an unhealthy mindset, and cheer on the progress. For families, I specifically look to enhance the attachment within the family and increase skills to reinforce healthy dynamics or develop new ones.

Do you feel broken, sad, ashamed, and/or anxious? Does it feel like these things will never change & you are damaged down to the core, even after years of therapy? Do you feel stuck in a time & place that doesn’t exist anymore and beat yourself up because you can’t “just get over it?” Maybe life was going well for you & suddenly panic attacks and depression have set in. You may be experiencing the effects of toxic stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or complex PTSD (a form of PTSD that happens after prolonged exposure to trauma, such as childhood abuse). I know it may feel hard to believe, but true healing is possible.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
