I’ve been a therapist of one type or another for the past 30 years. I’m currently seeing patients for a number of reasons, some rather moderate and some fairly severe. I have extension experience with addictive thinking, anxiety (including compulsive behaviors), depression, existential or interpersonal concerns, bi-polar depression, mindfulness and anger. As a rule, I don’t see
couples
. My patients range in age from 11 to 90.

I believe that therapy is a collaborative
relationship
where you have the opportunity to remove some of the obstacles that prevent you from living more fully and joyfully.
My approach to therapy is first to fully understand your difficulties and then work with you to find the best ways to make changes that promote growth and personal fulfillment. I believe that it is crucial for you to feel that therapy is a safe space where together we can explore, examine, and be curious about your experiences and your relationships with other people. In my years of practicing, I have found that many distressing symptoms (such as anxiety and depression) often disappear when people have the opportunity to look closely at their relationships with others.

Anxiety, depression and

difficulties often get in the way of being at our best. Problems concerning anger, assertiveness, sexuality, spirituality and finding one's way in life are also more frequent than many realize. To be unshackled from these limiting psychological factors is to be quickened to growth and awakened to live out one's unique idiom. This results in more joyful aliveness, inspiration, and peace -- magnifying the difference you make in your life and in the world.

I understand how hard it is to sort through a list of names to find someone with whom you are comfortable talking. Clients often tell me that they felt at ease in our first phone contact. I love what I do; helping individuals and families understand and learn healthy ways to cope with issues like depression, anxiety, troubled relationships, & loss, and to make lasting changes in their personal lives. I strive to develop a truly collaborative partnership with my clients to build the sense of safety and trust needed to discuss uncomfortable topics and take risks. Therapy with me often involves re-examining old ways of thinking that might be fostering negative emotions and patterns of behavior; identifying and confronting fears; and practicing new ways of solving problems in order to live a fuller, more satisfying life.

Looking for the "right" therapist can be a daunting task. It might be helpful to know, I felt it was necessary to first earn the right to accompany others on their personal psychological journeys by embarking on the same psychological journey, on which, I would be inviting and accompanying my clients. In addition to my formal education, it is by continuing on my own therapeutic journey, that has afforded me a deep comfort level, degree of understanding and respect of this process, regardless of what in particular finds you seeking support. Additionally, I am a holistic practitioner, using both eastern/western approaches.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
