Every client I work with is multifaceted and has many identities. I adapt my approach to meet people where they are, and honor the differences between us. People often come to therapy looking for change. I aim to provide a supportive space where change can safely occur. I have training in Somatic Experiencing, and believe that supporting the mind-body connection can be a fundamental part of a full healing and growth process. I believe every person has an innate capacity to heal, adapt, and thrive, once genuine support and safety are in place. Whether you reach out to me or another therapist, I hope you find what you need.

I work with adults who are struggling to build the types of relationships they crave. Some of my clients are looking for good friends and community, while others are struggling to find love. Still others find themselves pushing love away, even when it's available. What all of my clients have in common is that they feel anxious, powerless, or hopeless about their situations. Many of my clients are immigrants, and seek a therapist who is sensitive to how cultural factors and (im)migration impact their ability to successfully connect with others. (I also offer immigration evaluations.)

After 7 years of training, practice, and providing clinical supervision at the Capital Institute for Cognitive Therapy, I've transitioned to private practice in Woodley Park. I have significant training in Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Psychodynamic, Mindfulness-based, and Metacognitive approaches. These are the main schools in the field, and combined allow me to offer both practical techniques for troublesome thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; as well as help you see subtleties in yourself that likely influence how and why you may be stuck.

The process of healing, when viewed in etymological terms, means to make whole (from Old English, Hal). In order to realize our wholeness we must have a space in which the various aspects of our being are able to exist. The essence of my work is to provide that space. But the space alone is not enough. In order for healing to take place we must learn to meet those fractured aspects of our being with acceptance, love, and compassion. Often those very parts (which now hold our fear and pain) took shape as a result of aggression, rejection, or lack of validation. Those unmet needs turned into symptoms.

Congratulations on searching for someone to help you explore your mental health! It's not an easy decision and therapy can be challenging at times, but I have the utmost respect for people willing to face their vulnerable parts in order to grow and develop. The fit between a client and a counselor is an important part of therapy, so I recommend reaching out to speak with me further to see if I might be able to be of service for what you are seeking. I'll list some considerations here so you can see if you'd like to reach out to discuss our potential work together. I offer a free consultation session to explore your options.

I adamantly believe that my job as a therapist isn’t to “fix” people, or to give advice, or to tell you what to do. My job is to help you untangle, and then, put the pieces together - to meet you exactly where you are while gently encouraging your growth - and to help you unlock your own wisdom and strength. I like to describe my process as having “one foot in and one foot out.” I have “one foot in” in the sense that I am right there with you, present with your emotions, seeking to deeply understand your experiences, while also keeping “one foot out” so that I’m able to offer new perspectives and help you through your struggles.

Seeking relief from unpleasant feelings like sadness, irritability, anxiety, depression, anger & grief? When you struggle emotionally, small things can require greater effort. You may have feelings or reactions you can’t explain that defy your best strategies for feeling better. Perhaps you find yourself repeating patterns of behavior you’re not proud of. Or lack interest in pursuits you once enjoyed. Maybe you envision a happier, more productive life but don’t know how to get it. Therapy can help you identify and harness your strengths while adapting and altering patterns that don’t serve you well.

Got a little one struggling with behavior issues? Perhaps you have a bigger one and you're not sure what the problems could be? I've worked with toddlers, young children, and teens experiencing challenges with depression, anxiety, problems with social media, and academic issues. I am consistent, honest, and work hard to ensure kids are gaining what's needed to enjoy both social and emotional success. I even work with teachers and daycare staff. If you need assistance with a challenging student, I can provide specialized school support to help determine next best steps.

I love working with couples and individuals with difficulty in romantic relationships (i.e. sexual issues, communication, infidelity, divorce), adults who come from dysfunctional childhoods, as well as those with anxiety, impulsivity, and addiction. I also enjoy working with those in non-traditional romantic relationships (i.e. ethically non-monogamous, polyamorous). I am LGBTQIA- affirming and sex positive. I work best with clients who are engaged, thoughtful, and motivated for change. My style is empathic and direct, with a sense of humor. I believe strongly in the therapeutic alliance and the client/therapist fit.

You may be coming to therapy to address a long-standing concern that you are feeling ready to explore more and/or that is becoming too difficult to deal with on your own. Or you might be seeking help in the wake of a more immediate crisis or loss, and are looking for emotional stabilization and support. I strive to be warm, curious and non-judgmental in my approach, with the aim of building a safe and trusting relationship that serves as a foundation for deeper emotional work.
