As a sexual health psychotherapist, I treat what is commonly labeled as " sexual addiction" or "compulsive sexual behavior" as a problem of competing motivations - men wanting to both stop and continue their sexual behavior despite harmful consequences.
How do you know if your sexual behavior is out of control? It's a subjective question that many men unfortunately wait until relationship, occupational or medical consequences accumulate before considering. I believe the most important person to evaluate concerns with regulating sexual behavior is the man experiencing the dilemma. I start with two basic questions: "What is your conflict with your sexual behavior?" and "What is your vision for your sexual health?" Since 2001, I have provided a safe, informed and confidential space for sexual health conversations with heterosexual, gay and bisexual men.

I am accepting new clients for EMDR, Internal Family Systems, or Sensorimotor work only. If you’re looking to make big internal shifts through the mind-body connection, then keep reading. I might be your next therapist. You deserve to be heard and understood. And yet, healing requires more than talking and listening. It takes things like— 1) being in your body, in ways that feel safe, grounding, and good; 2) connecting with your internal parts or aspects, especially if they seem unacceptable, out-of-control, or bad; and 3) engaging your right brain, so you link your thoughts with emotions, body sensations, and images.

We are dedicated to walking alongside clients from all backgrounds who are struggling with the burden of trauma, particularly those traumas which stem from broken relationships, betrayal, neglect, sexual or behavioral addictions, and abuse in its many forms. These can wreak havoc on one's own life, and leave a wake of pain and betrayal in the lives of those who are connected with them. If you relate to this chaos, we are very aware of the shame, pain and confusion you feel. If you are the partner or family member of someone weighed down with this trauma, we understand your despair, confusion, and anger, too.

I also understand that personality disorders often present additional barriers to recovery from chemical or sexual addiction, two areas where I bring focused expertise.
The initial sessions focus on achieving diagnostic clarity. It's essential to carefully distinguish personality disorders from personality issues, just as it is to differentiate between substance abuse and dependence, or between sexual addiction and other sexual concerns. Let's figure out what is going on to get you the treatment you need.

Sexual Addiction Therapists

When should someone seek treatment for sex addiction?

People should seek treatment for sex addiction if they cannot control their sexual thoughts or behaviours to the point that it disrupts their ability to function in daily life, for example by threatening their finances, career, or relationships. This may include spending an excessive amount of time obsessing over sex, planning sex, watching pornography, or masturbating, as well as consistently engaging in risky sexual activities, using sex to escape distressing feelings, or attempting yet failing to control sexual behavior.

What are the most common treatment options for sex addiction?

Psychotherapy is the most common treatment for sex addiction; therapy helps patients better understand their compulsive thoughts and behaviors and develop strategies to manage their desires. Therapy may be supplemented by medications, such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-androgens, and the alcohol and substance use medication Naltrexone, as well as support groups, such as 12-step programs.

How long does therapy take for sex addiction?

Recovering from compulsive behavior takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but research suggests 12 therapy sessions may be enough to see change. Treatment for sexual compulsions requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers and developing coping skills, and potential lifestyle changes such as cutting out alcohol or drugs.

What if sex addiction is left untreated?

Compulsive sexual behavior can have serious repercussions if left unaddressed. For example, if sexual obsessions consume the vast majority of a person’s time, they may lose their job. If they can’t stop paying for sex, their finances may suffer. If they’re dishonest in their relationships, their partner may leave them. If they consistently feel shame, they may struggle with anxiety, depression, or loneliness. Therapy can help people develop the tools to manage sexual thoughts and behaviors that feel uncontrollable.
