My goal is to care for the whole person by teaching the individual coping skills to handle stressors caused by medically, mentally, or spiritually challenged life. Are your health issues or that of a loved one weighing you down and interfering with your relationships? You can have PEACE of mind and JOY even amid these challenges. Working as a Nurse/Midwife was fulfilling. Currently, applying psychotherapy to the nurse/midwife experience is impressive, and working with a Doctor of Professional Counseling (DPC) degree is like icing on the cake. I love what I do. I make well-informed decisions about caring for my clients.

I am in network with BCBS, CareFirst, and Cigna.
My ideal clients are young adults navigating the emotional weight of growing up — managing stress, anxiety, anger, or a shaky sense of self-worth. Many arrive feeling stuck, misunderstood, or unsure of who they are becoming. I meet them where they are, creating a safe, collaborative space where trust is built and real growth becomes possible. Through approaches like CBT and AEDP, I help clients develop healthier coping skills, emotional insight, and a more compassionate relationship with themselves and the people around them.

A client isn't someone who has everything figured out, it’s someone who is willing to show up, be honest, and engage in the process of change. Therapy works best when there’s a genuine desire to explore emotions, patterns, and challenges, even when that journey feels uncomfortable. Most importantly, You do not need to be “ready” in a perfect way. You can come to therapy feeling lost, hurt, confused, or overwhelmed. What matters is your willingness to take the first step towards healing making positive changes. My goal is to us this safe space support you, challenge you, and explore alternate ways of thinking to achieve growth.

I am a fellow traveler on a healing journey. I started out as a young adult believing I had something to share with the world. As I began to learn about psychology and counseling, I came to realize that I had multiple issues I needed to heal from. I share this because I want my clients to know that while our paths may be different, everyone has to start at the beginning, everyone has something to learn, and everyone has wisdom to share. Therefore, counseling should be a collaborative process that is fueled by curiosity, compassion, openness, and willingness to learn, grow, and change.

I believe that it is impossible and unhelpful to keep politics out of the therapy room. The personal continues to be political and it has become increasingly clear to more people how politics directly impact mental health. While individual therapy is exactly that, we also live within larger systems that shape how we feel. When these systems are in a state of chaos and instability, feelings of helplessness, anxiety, exhaustion, anger, and guilt are all normal responses.

I truly believe that when we start a therapy journey, it is a huge step because you’re entrusting someone with the ability to provide you with care and guidance to address your needs. There is nothing I take more pride in as a therapist than being able to support the people who have trusted me with their care. I believe that through collaborative work, we can help you gain insight and direction to resolve the things you desire.

Feeling stuck? Anxious? Like you’re carrying too much and can’t drop the ball? You’re not alone and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. At Defining You Therapy, we get it. Life comes at you fast - family pressure, relationship stress, anxiety that won’t quit, trauma that lingers longer than anyone talks about. And trying to keep it all together? That’s exhausting. Here’s the thing: healing isn’t about “fixing” yourself. It’s about having the right support to navigate what’s heavy, confusing, or just plain hard.

Openings for July 2026! Hi, I'm Abbie. I'm a licensed graduate professional counselor (LGPC) providing therapy to individuals ages 16+ in Washington, DC. I enjoy working with people of all ages, especially young adults who may be exploring their identity and navigating life transitions. My goal is for therapy to be a vehicle to help get you to where you want to go. I believe strongly that therapy is not a "one size fits all" approach and trust that a client is the expert in their own life experiences. To this end, my approach to therapy is integrative and tailored to the individual wants and needs identified by each client.
