I work with a diverse range of adults, couples and families. Many clients are high achievers experiencing anxiety, depression, overwhelm or loneliness as they juggle various demands. We often explore how dramatic societal or geo-political changes are exacerbating these challenges. In my work with you, I will bring a calm and warm approach, often interspersed with humor, to establish and build trust. Together we will gain a fuller understanding of your challenges or your patterns and habits you want to change. We will then take a therapeutic approach based on your unique experiences, strengths and values to achieve your goals.

You're in a stressful job environment, such as big law, and are feeling overwhelmed by all that is being asked of you, both at work and home. Maybe you also have a history of trauma and still have lingering self-blame or sadness about it. Self-doubt, looping thoughts, and sleepless nights are becoming more and more common. You're falling apart while trying to hold everything together perfectly. You’re worried you will fail while everyone else seems to be doing fine. You can’t concentrate and are less productive. Your worrying and anxiety are getting in your way and you’re feeling crippled by the ordinary day.

I specialize in working with high-functioning professionals who are succeeding by most external measures, yet privately feel overwhelmed, depleted, or disconnected from what matters most. Many of my clients work in demanding fields where performance expectations are high and vulnerability feels costly. Common concerns include chronic stress and burnout, high-functioning anxiety, depression, relationship strain, and navigating significant personal or professional transitions. My background working in corporate and government environments gives me firsthand familiarity with the pressures professionals in the DC-Virginia corridor face.

Life can bring unhappiness, distress, and uncertainty. It can also bring opportunities for satisfaction, connection with others, and meaning. To realize that something in your life needs to change and to seek support in doing so takes courage. The support of a well-trained, compassionate, and supportive therapist can provide needed comfort and security—whether to provide support during a stressful period, to address deeper issues in forming and improving relationships, or to adjust to a loss or life transition. Sometimes you simply know that you’re unhappy and are uncertain how to change.

I offer therapy & evaluation (testing) services for those 18+. Clients don't come to me because they are happy. They come, most likely, because they are in pain and hurt. They are tired of feeling stuck, and the fear, tears, and whatever seems to be causing them all. They aren’t interested in therapy because they want therapy. In fact, they are not even sure IF they want therapy—but they ARE sure they want to get unstuck and feel better. So, for you: here you are. . . not all that sure that this is going to help but damn sure you want to do something that might make a positive change and get your life moving forward again.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." I believe that individuals are more than just their experiences. I view psychotherapy as a place in which you can explore your life experiences as well as gain greater insight into your character "what lies within." I believe that growth occurs when people believe that they can make things different in their own lives. My role as a therapist is to support and encourage you as you take steps toward making changes in your life.

You’ve checked all the boxes and done everything “right,” but under the surface, you feel numb, chaotic, anxious, or even broken. Maybe you’re constantly striving, stuck in perfectionism, and carrying the weight of past experiences that won’t let go. You push, push, push, always because deep down there's a fear that if you slow down, it could all fall apart. You are exhausted and no matter how much you do you never feel like you are enough. You want to feel like you are enough. I help high-achieving professionals and LGBTQIA+ adults move past crippling anxiety, depression, and perfectionism to reclaim autonomy and confidence.

Our relationships with others and growing up include really profound and beautiful experiences; and, our experiences can also leave us feeling stuck, afraid, and angry. This can be especially true when we are BIPOC-identified, are the children of immigrants or first-generation immigrants ourselves, identify as LGBTQIA+, and/or have other marginalized identities. Common concerns endorsed by my clients include imposter syndrome, perfectionism, body dysmorphia, difficulty with safety and trust in relationships and/or dating, low self-esteem, and persistent anxiety and depression.

Greeting! I’m Dennis, a LICSW with over 15 years of experience helping adults (sometimes teenagers) heal from trauma, anxiety, depression, and overwhelming stress. Therapy with me isn’t about fixing you — it’s about creating space to unpack your experiences, separate your identity from what you’ve been through, and move forward with clarity and strength. Using a humanistic, CBT-informed approach, I offer practical tools and a calm, grounded environment where you feel safe, respected, and truly heard.

My goal is to help you become psychologically stronger and feel better about yourself as a person. I'll help you think clearly, know yourself better, develop calmness, communicate effectively, and behave smartly. Abusive self-criticism, impulsivity or undue anger are destructive patterns that worsen over time if they are not contained. I'll teach you to gain self-control so that you can catch these tendencies in their earliest stages and substitute better alternatives. I focus on learning self-compassion, so you can deal with a lack of success without turning against yourself. Removing gratuitous negativity from life is liberating.

You’re thoughtful and capable, yet lately the pressure feels heavier than it should. Maybe you’re anxious, overwhelmed, or caught in self-criticism that doesn’t give you any room to breathe. Many of my clients function well on the surface but feel stressed, lonely, or disconnected inside. And if you’ve grown up between cultures or feel pulled by competing expectations at home, balancing those worlds can intensify the strain. I help people explore these layers at their own pace, creating space for clarity, relief, and a steadier, more grounded sense of self to grow.

Clients with a strong desire to fix their relationships in the most profound ways fit well with my practice .This is true even if you don’t know what is wrong or your partner disagrees about what the problem is. The change is not just communication patterns but also underlying intense emotional distress or explosive patterns of expression. We address complaints such as lack of sex or affection or emotional withdrawal. We stop couples from divorce and fix communication problems by training partners how to best be supportive and to understand underlying psychological messages unwittingly communicated between partners.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
