I work with a diverse range of adults, couples and families. Many clients are high achievers experiencing anxiety, depression, overwhelm or loneliness as they juggle various demands. We often explore how dramatic societal or geo-political changes are exacerbating these challenges. In my work with you, I will bring a calm and warm approach, often interspersed with humor, to establish and build trust. Together we will gain a fuller understanding of your challenges or your patterns and habits you want to change. We will then take a therapeutic approach based on your unique experiences, strengths and values to achieve your goals.

I work with motivated, high functioning professionals in Washington DC. Many clients come to me for help navigating career, life transitions, changes in their physical health, anxiety, relationships, and questions about their identity and purpose in life. I believe that therapy is a place to explore the full range of the human experience, and that no topic is off limits. By creating a space to say things that would otherwise go unsaid, my clients experience radical candor, feedback, and a perspective outside of their own self narrative.

Individuals seek out therapy with me for reasons ranging from panic attacks and existential dread, life transitions, disordered eating and identity exploration. In relationship/couples therapy, I help folks get unstuck from entrenched patterns, like trading blame or feeling unappreciated and misunderstood. Couples sometimes seek therapy with me to address co-parenting challenges, to explore questions around identity and sexuality, and to get help making big decisions. Sometimes folks aren't sure what they want, but they know their relationship isn't going the way either party hoped. Other times the goal is simply to stop fighting.

We all feel stuck at times. I believe this experience can result from an unhelpful pattern developed over time, and in addition to feeling lost or unfulfilled, we may find ourselves having emotional or behavioral concerns. From a non-judgmental space, I offer a supportive environment to connect while we work together to uncover the patterns that may contribute to pain and problems in your daily life. It is my aim to help illuminate different ways of being so that you may experience less pain, more satisfaction, and a greater quality of life.

I am very well trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and offer it but do NOT try to "fit" clients into that therapeutic approach or any others I offer.
I offer therapy & evaluation (testing) services for those 18+. Clients don't come to me because they are happy. They come, most likely, because they are in pain and hurt. They are tired of feeling stuck, and the fear, tears, and whatever seems to be causing them all. They aren’t interested in therapy because they want therapy. In fact, they are not even sure IF they want therapy—but they ARE sure they want to get unstuck and feel better. So, for you: here you are. . . not all that sure that this is going to help but damn sure you want to do something that might make a positive change and get your life moving forward again.

Evening/weekend appointments. Finding yourself in deep distress or feeling dissatisfied with life may signal you are ready for change. Therapy can help you understand the roots of distress and help you make desired changes. My therapeutic approach focuses on deepening your understanding of and compassion for yourself by exploring aspects of your identity, examining your values and beliefs, reflecting on relationships that have shaped you, and identifying patterns that may no longer serve you. From this place of understanding and compassion, those sources of distress can shift, creating profound changes in the areas of life most important to you.

You're in a stressful job environment, such as big law, and are feeling overwhelmed by all that is being asked of you, both at work and home. Maybe you also have a history of trauma and still have lingering self-blame or sadness about it. Self-doubt, looping thoughts, and sleepless nights are becoming more and more common. You're falling apart while trying to hold everything together perfectly. You’re worried you will fail while everyone else seems to be doing fine. You can’t concentrate and are less productive. Your worrying and anxiety are getting in your way and you’re feeling crippled by the ordinary day.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists
How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?
Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?
It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?
To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?
CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
