Do intrusive thoughts get stuck in your mind and feel impossible to shake? Thoughts like, “What if I’m a terrible person?”, “What if I don’t actually love my spouse?”, or “What if I get a deadly disease?” These thoughts can feel so threatening that you may end up checking things repeatedly, replaying conversations, or seeking reassurance, but the relief never lasts. It can be exhausting, confusing, and scary to live this way. You’re not alone, and effective treatment is available.

Welcome! I am a Psychologist offering psychotherapy through secure videochat, or Telehealth in CA, VA, MD, DC. This is a convenient and effective way to get the help you need on your schedule where you're comfortable. For more information, see my web page (https://drjeffreymann.com/telehealth/). Frequently the events of our lives get to the point where we feel like so much of our energy is being wasted simply trying to "keep it together". I'm not a believer in magic cures, but there is A LOT than can be done to address the ways we think and behave in our everyday lives that can have a profound impact on our satisfaction with life.

Feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, or quietly exhausted—even when life looks “fine” on the outside—is more common than you might think. Many of the women I work with are navigating career pressure, relationship strain, identity shifts, or burnout while holding a lot for others. I specialize in therapy for Gen Z, millennial, and midlife women seeking support with anxiety, stress, relationships, and life transitions. My approach is relational, thoughtful, and personalized, offering a calm, nonjudgmental space to explore what feels out of balance and what’s asking for attention now.

You and your partner may be feeling out of sync, struggling to truly hear and understand one another. This relationship means so much to you, yet sadness, fear, and frustration keep growing. Even when you try to communicate clearly, your partner seems to see things differently, and conflicts remain unresolved. You're feeling disconnected and alone. You're looking for a roadmap to learn to communicate deeply and effectively, and rebuild your bond. You long to be understood and feel close again, as well as secure that you can count on each other to face life’s challenges together. Therapy can create deep change and reconnection.

I work with individuals who feel their lives are hindered by unwanted or distressing feelings, or self-defeating patterns of behavior, and who experience depression, anxiety, anger, low self esteem, compulsive or impulsive behaviors, or relationship difficulties. By establishing more effective coping skills and responses, positive changes can develop and lead to a greater sense of fulfillment. I approach each individual treatment collaboratively, exploring the foundation of the problem, identifying problematic patterns, and then developing treatment goals tailored to the unique needs of each individual client.

Seeking help takes courage. I am invested in working together toward making the changes you seek by creating a safe, trusting environment where we can explore the roadblocks holding you back. I practice in a holistic community where many modalities of treatment are used to promote healing. Do you feel "keyed up" most of the time or continue to behave in damaging patterns where you know the "why" but can't seem to make changes? Talk may not be enough.

I support individuals navigating trauma and grief—whether that manifests as PTSD, anxiety, sleep struggles, or something else.
Navigating identity, feeling stuck in relationship patterns, or dealing with past experiences that still feel unresolved can be hard to carry on your own. I help my clients understand why these patterns keep showing up, how their past has shaped them, and begin overcoming these distressing cycles. I’m a trauma-informed, LGBTQ+ affirming, relational therapist, supporting individuals and couples struggling with trauma, grief, relationships, mood, self esteem, and identity exploration. I specialize in supporting LGBTQ+ clients, those in polyamorous and nontraditional relationships, and clients navigating multiple cultural identities.

Our connections with ourselves, others, and our communities can bring tremendous joy, meaning, and fulfillment. In contrast, experiences of disconnection, isolation, shame, and loss can elicit profound anguish. A crucial step toward relief and enduring growth in psychotherapy starts with a therapeutic relationship grounded in trust. Beyond the reasons bringing you in, I am committed to listening to your life story and getting to know you as a whole, imperfect person who deserves unconditional care and respect. From there, we can identify opportunities to relate to yourself and others in new ways.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
