As a sexual assault advocate, I've worked with survivors in hospitals and SAFE center settings who were recently assaulted and also have experience with sexual violence and domestic violence from my work with a local women’s shelter in FL.
Whether you feel unable to live the life you desire because of painful childhood experiences, traumatic memories, limiting core beliefs, insecure attachments in relationships, or for reasons completely unique to your own life experiences, it IS possible to find healing. You CAN live a life that feels most authentic to who you are, even if it seems unattainable. Using mind-body approaches and evidence-based techniques, I hope to facilitate your access to the innate and powerful resources that exist, and ultimately empower you to create a life that is meaningful and representative of who you want to be.

I am eager to work with adults who have experienced trauma and want therapy to look through how it has impacted them. Trauma can mean a lot to different people though whether that is from sexual assault , military combat, child abuse, cultural/religious abuse or loss of a loved one. What is important is that there was a meaningful shift you struggle to deal with, and I want to help. It also more than post-traumatic stress. You can also experience great sadness, daily stress or trouble in your relationships you do not understand.

In a world full of judgment, you need to trust that your therapist is affirming and ready to hear your "deep, dark secrets." With that, you can then talk about what's really going on and address your true concerns. I have experience helping people with all kinds of issues, including relationships, sex and sexuality, addictions, gender identity, physical/emotional/ sexual abuse , as well as general questions of self-worth. Together, we will explore any issue that is important to you. We will discuss your past when relevant, and what you're currently thinking and feeling.

Focus areas in my practice include relational and acute trauma, sexual assault , and persistent depression and/or anxiety, and difficulty navigating relationships.
If you're looking for a therapist, there's a good chance you feel like "something" in your life isn't working -- perhaps within yourself, a relationship, or your career. Sometimes it's hard to know what that "something" is, and, other times, the feeling may be directly connected to a specific event, relationship, or personality trait. As your therapist, I will work with you at a pace that feels manageable, and together we will reflect on what feels like it's not working and identify possibilities that may bring relief or change.

My therapy work is focused on emotional health and wellbeing. I work individually with clients and tailor treatment to best fit each person's concerns, character and goals. I do this by integrating insight-oriented treatment and establishing new ways of being in the present. This combines the exploration of long-standing maladaptive patterns and a focus on present-day functioning. I help also people examine and improve relationship dynamics.

Healing and change are possible for all of us. I am reminded daily of people's innate ability to mend and grow if they are provided with the right tools in a supportive and compassionate environment. Past traumatic events can leave scars and behavior patterns that can get in the way of people leading the life that they choose. I create a safe space where we can work together to allow scars to heal and transformative change to take place. My clients experience healing from sexual trauma, adverse life events, relationship issues, generalized anxiety and dissociative symptoms and they find freedom from feeling "stuck".

I view therapy as an invitation to bring awareness to the here and now. For many of us, we press forward, through, and over difficult feelings when they arise in our daily lives. Often they show up as unwanted thoughts or images. They not only fill us with dread, but we will go to great lengths to avoid them. On the other hand, what if moving toward our feelings actually reduces the influence they have over us, allowing us to attend to the very things we value, thereby creating meaning and purpose in our lives.

I work with adults and adolescents who are experiencing challenging life circumstances and adjustments, struggle with important relationships, self-esteem, live with mood disorders/anxiety, feel stuck, and individuals wanting to live a more satisfying and engaged life. My work is to participate in creating a safe space and to use my skills to promote awareness and support positive change. This may require looking at both past and present-day issues. Developing a good working relationship (being a good "fit") with my clients is essential.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
