My orientation toward counseling is a strengths based approach, where focusing on resiliency and building upon one's abilities are an essential part of managing conflict and confusion. I believe that the therapeutic process has the ability to empower us to gain insight and create new possibilities, allowing us to work through patterns of thinking and behavior to establish more productive coping mechanisms and strategies for when difficulties occur. Together, we will collaborate on constructing goals to help ease distress and gain clarity related to the challenges you are currently experiencing.

I think therapy is like a puzzle, you put the pieces together to create a full picture. I focus on helping you develop a deeper exploration of who you are and how you can feel whole again. By understanding what's working and what's not working, we will be entering a deeper exploration of the self. The ultimate goal of therapy with me is to develop greater self knowledge, self acceptance and be able to change the things that need changing. Bring your patience, this is hard work and it takes time. I welcome the opportunity to work with you.

As you search for the right therapist, I recommend looking for certain essential qualities: Close and empathic listening - do you feel heard? Seasoned knowledge and technique - do you feel understood and responded to helpfully? A good "fit" - do you feel comfortable with this person? It is impossible to discern these qualities from a profile alone. You may need to allow yourself a couple of sessions with more than one therapist before deciding. It takes time to know, but there's a lot at stake and much to gain.

My goal is to create a safe and accepting environment that allows us to better explore the issues you are facing. I believe that one of the most important elements of counseling is the therapeutic relationship. I value a trusting, open, and interactive relationship that allows us to improve insight into your struggles and issues, and develop a plan for recovery and healing.

I use an active, serious and friendly approach to help you figure out where you are right now and how to move forward. Talking with a professional psychologist can organize your thinking and transform your outlook. You can overcome issues such as anxiety, fearfulness, low mood, career concerns, dating troubles, family problems and more when you move past emotional roadblocks. Problem-solve for 1-2 sessions or take a deeper look at your underlying thoughts and habits. When you understand yourself more fully you can take action to make your life better.

I help individual adults to feel and function better and find far more effective ways to address life's difficulties. I also help couples to restore intimacy (or to part amicably, if need be) by teaching effective conflict resolution skills. The fact is, most people feel ambivalent about starting therapy or couples counseling. By now, you might feel fairly uncomfortable and frustrated, realizing that everyone's friendly advice, the self-help books and web articles, and all of your existing coping mechanisms have not worked for you. You want relief and results now.

In 35 years of practice, my peers have consistently recognized me in WASHINGTONIAN's "Best" therapists. I love my job; I get to connect with patients deepest psyches, sharing intense joy and pain on the path to fuller lives. Therapy involves more openness, vulnerability, and self awareness than you imagined possible as you work through shame, trauma, passivity, dependencies, insecurity, etc. You take responsibility for bad habits, limitations and poor decisions. You take better care of yourself and loved ones, achieve goals, manage stressors, and grieve losses while improving relationships, job performance and decision making.
