I am a Clinical Social Worker, licensed to practice in DC, Maryland and Virginia. I work with adults from all walks of life who are dealing with personal issues including depression, anxiety, relationships, identity, and COVID anxiety. I am passionate about the healing power of therapy. Therapy can resolve long standing psychological issues that take great courage to address. It can also be a great support when people deal with unexpected life changes, such as for example COVID, illness, loss of a loved one, becoming a parent,
divorce
, homesickness, adjusting to a new environment, starting a new career.

Recent studies of
divorce
attorneys have indicated that pornography use is cited as one of the major contributors to
divorce
for 50% of divorcing couples.
I specialize in working with trauma, anxiety, depression and relationship issues. I help clients gain insight into what is getting in their way and to develop healthier coping strategies. I also work extensively with those struggling with addictions, including alcoholism and sexual addictions and compulsive internet pornography use. I have successfully helped break the interference of addictions and compulsions to lead healthier, more productive lives. In addition, I often work with spouses/partners who are struggling with the impact (and trauma) of these addictions on themselves and their relationships

My specialties include sexual and relationship difficulties,
divorce
, relationship transitions, and addressing the aftermath of affairs.
My primary focus is on helping couples and individuals with sexual issues. In working with couples, I find dissatisfaction with partnered sex is often linked to deeper relationship difficulties and the two can be intertwined. In other instances, the therapeutic focus is primarily on enhancing technique and increasing desire rather than improving the relationship. I also work individually with women to eliminate barriers to sexual wellness and increase acceptance. I enjoy working with gay, lesbian, and heterosexual clients and have respect for sexual fluidity and variance in erotic interest.

I am experienced in working with many clinical concerns such as clients reckoning with
divorce
or separation, grief and loss, persons experiencing shame, chronic depression and anxiety and challenges with emotion regulation and unstable interpersonal relationships.
I enjoy working with clients in the polyamorous or ethically non monogamous and or kink community. For clients exploring non monogamy I provide a safe space to explore uncertainties, insecurities, and fears while also celebrating many of the joys this relationship style brings. I also work with many clients who may be questioning their gender or sexual identity. I also work with many clients who have experienced trauma, dissociation, and attachment wounding and family of origin issues.

I see children, adolescents, and adults, including children struggling with their parents' separation or
divorce
.
My approach is geared towards helping clients make choices and relate to others in ways that reinforce their feelings of autonomy, fulfillment, and peace. We engage to explore current situations and the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and then develop strategies to help better manage situations or make decisions. Strategies we explore may include short term action plans as well as longer term resilience building to manage ongoing challenges. I will work with clients to develop new ways of interpreting difficulties, understanding others, and communicating that are in line with their own values and hopes.

Trauma changes us and the way we see the world. In fact it takes things away from us that we really want. Surviving trauma makes clients resilient, but can leave them feeling disconnected from themselves and the world. Their struggles may look like anxiety, depression, avoidance, chronic physical illness, loss of sense of self or grief that does not go away. I am specialized in EMDR trauma therapy and Mindfulness-Holistic Psychotherapy. I work with adults who need support with trauma connected to complex grief,
divorce
, disruptive family relationships/attachments, sexual trauma, childhood abuse, or other stressful life transitions.

My specialty areas include relationship difficulties, anxiety, self-esteem issues, career/work concerns, stress management, adult children from distressed families (substance abuse, mental illness and/or
divorce
), life transitions and cultural adjustment issues.
DR. DAVIS IS NOT ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS AT THIS TIME. I provide individual therapy to adults. I work holistically, consider the whole person and believe in the connections between mind, body and spirit; thoughts, feelings and behaviors and the past and the present. I work actively with clients to identify and gain a better understanding of the influence of past experiences, inner conflicts and struggles and self-defeating thought and behavior patterns on current difficulties. We will develop strategies to remove barriers, build on strengths and capabilities, and develop effective coping strategies.

Divorce Therapists
How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.
What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.
When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.
How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
