I have worked extensively with individuals,
couples
, and families whose traumatic or painful experiences--either recent or past--contribute to their current problems or difficulties.
I view therapy as an invitation to bring awareness to the here and now. For many of us, we press forward, through, and over difficult feelings when they arise in our daily lives. Often they show up as unwanted thoughts or images. They not only fill us with dread, but we will go to great lengths to avoid them. On the other hand, what if moving toward our feelings actually reduces the influence they have over us, allowing us to attend to the very things we value, thereby creating meaning and purpose in our lives.

relationship
problems, and intimacy issues characterize the types of concerns with which he is often presented by clients. His competencies include

I create an environment that helps clients explore both the internal and external barriers to their healing and growth. As a psychologist I pull from working with diverse groups of people and assist on issues of trauma, grief, loss,
relationship
difficulties, wellness and health. To me, therapy is best when it's a mix of approaches that are used strategically to create a nonjudgmental and empathic atmosphere. My style is both warm and thought-provoking, and I actively collaborate with and support those with whom I work.

I work with a wide variety of clients in individual,
couples
, group and consultation formats.I provide a
relationship
that promotes respectful, direct expression of our unique human frailties and strengths be they happy, angry, fearful or sad. Psychotherapy is a potent elixir for change. The 'contents' of life provides for each of us at times a 'wild-ride', a 'lazy day', or somewhere in between. I help my clients with the 'process' of life to stay connected with their Self and others. If all goes well in the individual or
couples
therapy, most of my clients matriculate into a group psychotherapy process to further their growth.

What's wrong with this
relationship
? The same problems keep on repeating time after time. So what does a study of psychology reveal? A well-trained and experienced psychotherapist can help to shine a light into the dark unconscious places which shroud the mysteries. This helps to bring the issues into consciousness, and once there, allows you to work with them. This work involves change. There may be many underlying issues including: mental states of anxiety and depression, an addiction, anger, lack of trust, various stressors, poor communication, extended family interferences, and more.

One focus of my practice is Reproductive Health: women/
couples
seeking a pregnancy, mourning a miscarriage, struggling with postpartum difficulties or feeling concerned about either traditionally formed, adoptive or ART families.
Having witnessed and participated in twenty years of clients' progress, I have great confidence in this powerful process. We all want to feel optimistic and enjoy our lives, with minimal stress, doubts, anxiety, depression, and confusion. Most of us have strong and centered parts that were buried or muted as a result of trauma, loss or other painful experiences. Learning to empower these healthy parts helps us manage inevitable difficult thoughts and feelings more calmly and effectively and to enjoy healthy relationships. Depending on individual situations, short term therapy or Skype sessions may be possible.

In addition to treating anxiety, depression, and
relationship
issues, I have experience in substance use counseling and enjoy working with clients who are concerned about their substance use.
I specialize in adult psychotherapy, including anxiety, depression, self-esteem, substance use, trauma, relationships, and LGBTQ issues. It can be hard to experience hope when we feel stuck in old patterns of thinking and feeling about life, ourselves, and our relationships. This can lead to feelings of stress, confusion, unhappiness, or disappointment. I work to help individuals and
couples
to examine these patterns and to explore and experiment with new ways of thinking and acting, which in turn can have dramatic impact on how they are feeling.

You and your
partner
feel stuck and don’t know how to make things better. Arguments can go in circles and never feel resolved. Sometimes the smallest disagreement can escalate quickly. You don’t know why it has to be this hard when both of you want to feel understood and cared for. Maybe major life transitions and changes have made it hard to feel as connected as you used to. You miss feeling close, and like they have your back. Talking about your issues doesn’t seem to help, but avoiding them isn’t working either.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
