Both can be helpful for a range of issues that people come to see me for, including
anxiety
, depression, trauma, grief, burnout, relationship problems, identity work, low self-esteem, chronic self-doubt, over-thinking, loneliness, life transitions and more.
I’m a Yale- and Northwestern-trained clinical psychologist who offers primarily teletherapy to individuals and couples in the DC and NY areas, but also throughout the US. My home-office is in northern Virginia, outside Washington DC, so those nearby may also see me for in-person or walking therapy. I completed advanced clinical training and research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and the DC VA Medical Center. I then went on to receive specialized training in couples therapy at The Gottman Institute, one of the premier couples therapy centers in clinical research and practice.

Having witnessed and participated in twenty years of clients' progress, I have great confidence in this powerful process. We all want to feel optimistic and enjoy our lives, with minimal stress, doubts,
anxiety
, depression, and confusion. Most of us have strong and centered parts that were buried or muted as a result of trauma, loss or other painful experiences. Learning to empower these healthy parts helps us manage inevitable difficult thoughts and feelings more calmly and effectively and to enjoy healthy relationships. Depending on individual situations, short term therapy or Skype sessions may be possible.

I use an active, serious and friendly approach to help you figure out where you are right now and how to move forward. Talking with a professional psychologist can organize your thinking and transform your outlook. You can overcome issues such as
anxiety
, fearfulness, low mood, career concerns, dating troubles, family problems and more when you move past emotional roadblocks. Problem-solve for 1-2 sessions or take a deeper look at your underlying thoughts and habits. When you understand yourself more fully you can take action to make your life better.

There is little more frustrating than thinking and behaving in the same ways despite knowing they contribute to
anxiety
, depression, and other debilitating symptoms. I hear this time and time again from clients. Therapy is a place where you can start to gain the experiences you need to embody healthier thoughts and behaviors and make stronger connections with others well beyond the therapy room. (I also have experience in career counseling and offering clinical supervision to therapists-in-training).

What does therapy in the time of Covid-19 mean? These days when our life has been turned upside down, our general sense of
anxiety
may have increased. What will happen in the future? Will my family be ok? Will I have a job? At the same time, this public health crisis is intersecting very uniquely with our own personal life. Maybe you’re a college senior who didn’t get to graduate. Maybe you’ve recently had a loss and now feel more lonely than ever. Maybe now past trauma is coming to the fore. Maybe all of this just feels overwhelming. I can help. I bring a goal oriented, holistic approach to help you bring more calm to your life.

I strive to provide a collaborative and supportive working space for individual clients or couples with a range of presenting concerns. My clients tell me that they appreciate my warmth and practicality, as well as my willingness to provide an individualized treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. I believe that most clients' struggles-be they with depression,
anxiety
, attentional difficulties, or relationship issues-are born of and maintained by a range of factors. These factors may include past experiences, family history, biology, or unhelpful patterns of thinking.

My goal is to help both individuals and couples become "unstuck' from old patterns and develop the tools to live a more satisfying life. I will work with you to help find ways to cope with life's many challenges, including self-esteem issues, emotional distress,
anxiety
, depression, relationship concerns, and life transitions. Identifying the origins of your struggles is only one component of therapy. From there, we will work together to develop the skills necessary for you to navigate through these challenges.

I realize that for an individual to take the first steps toward looking inward at various psychological conflicts may be an
anxiety
-provoking process in and of itself, may even be a sense of relief, or a combination of the two. Through my professional training and experience in various treatment settings, I have had the honor to work with individuals and provide them the respect, privacy, and confidentiality that I believe every human being deserves. I focus on providing a safe, trusting, and confidential environment in which one may gain insight and understanding and ultimately grow through this therapeutic relationship.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
