In addition to treating anxiety, depression, and relationship issues, I have experience in
substance use
counseling and enjoy working with clients who are concerned about their
substance use
.
I specialize in adult psychotherapy, including anxiety, depression, self-esteem,
substance use
, trauma, relationships, and LGBTQ issues. It can be hard to experience hope when we feel stuck in old patterns of thinking and feeling about life, ourselves, and our relationships. This can lead to feelings of stress, confusion, unhappiness, or disappointment. I work to help individuals and couples to examine these patterns and to explore and experiment with new ways of thinking and acting, which in turn can have dramatic impact on how they are feeling.

If you would like to find out more about how I can help you sleep better or address your
substance use
, I would be happy to speak with you and answer any questions you might have about treatment.
If you have a hard time falling or staying asleep, if you wrestle with going to bed on time, if you struggle with addiction, or wish you could sleep without a sleep medication, my practice may be a good fit for you. I have a background in both Behavioral Sleep Medicine and Addiction Psychology. My approach is to be a co-investigator with my clients and identify the factors that perpetuate their sleep disorder or
substance use
disorder. I offer evidenced based cognitive behavioral interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for
Substance Use
Disorders (CBT-SUD).

/addiction.
Do you find yourself constantly worried, stressed, overwhelmed, or having racing thoughts? Maybe you fear losing control over yourself and what others might think of you if this happens. Or perhaps you’ve been feeling sad, irritable, having uncharacteristic outbursts of crying, and lacking energy or motivation to engage in pleasant activities. Many people who experience anxiety, depression, stress, and feeling overwhelmed start to isolate, avoid enjoyable activities and engage in unhealthy behaviors but soon find themselves more anxious, worried, and depressed than before. It can leave you feeling exhausted, stuck, and hopeless.

People come to treatment for a lot of reasons. Some severe- suicidal ideation, trauma, dissociation, self-harm, moments of crisis. Others appear to have a life that seems fine- stable work and/or relationships but experience a persistent and burbling sense that life is not as satisfying as it could be. Some have a question- should I leave my partner? My job? Have a baby? End a pregnancy? Come out? Let go of a part of my identity that others value? How do I live a more passionate and creative life?

Deciding to begin therapy can be a difficult step, but by building a supportive therapeutic relationship, we can understand what’s painful and troubling to you in a way that feels manageable. Maybe you’re not where you want to be in your life; you find yourself repeating familiar patterns and feeling stuck, or you feel overwhelmed by life transitions, anxiety, relationship struggles, loss, or addiction. You might find that talking to your family and friends isn’t helping you cope with your challenges as much as you'd like, and you realize you need a different kind of support.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
