I am a bilingual/bicultural psychologist (Spanish) with post-graduate training in trauma -focused therapies, couples therapy and emotion-focused therapies.
My focus is on helping children, adolescents, adults and couples develop effective and meaningful approaches to living fulfilling lives. I provide a person-centered environment combined with evidence-based understandings of emotion, cognition and behavior to effectively address life's challenges. I have worked in hospitals, clinics, schools, and universities with diverse populations and recognize how attachment histories, problematic thoughts, feelings and actions, and traumatic events are related to concerns like sadness, worry, relationship or health difficulties, and developing a sense of identity.

My inclusive, holistic approach integrates trauma -informed, intersectional, cultural and creative practices into my healing work with folx navigating trauma , inner child wounds, low self-esteem, life after foster care or adoption, anxiety, depression, addictions, substance use, triggers or flashbacks associated with intimate partner or sexual violence.
There are many layers and textures in each of our stories and individual healing journeys, that may make us believe that healing is impossible or that inner wellness after trauma is unattainable. You are worthy and capable of the healing you're envisioning. For many of us, a safe healing space is the first step in that journey back to self and is the support we’ve been searching for to become the next best version of ourselves. Together, we co-create the space you need to celebrate your innate wisdom; restore trust in your intuition and voice; and nurture your growth towards more healing and easeful living.

Therapy is a unique experience for each person. It helps you learn yourself, your relationships (past and present), and how you interact with the world. It is a place of self healing and understanding. It is a place to find safety and refuge to manage stress, anger, guilt, anxiety, overwhelming feelings, trauma , interpersonal conflict, and significant life events. I work with youth and adults to help address these issues. I am trained as a psychodynamic therapist, practicing from a relational standpoint. I use several clinical approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment theory, and trauma focused therapy as needed.

My clients have included career professionals in the public and private spheres, artists and writers, business executives, teachers, war veterans, couples in crisis, those grappling with mid-life quandaries, trauma survivors, retirees, and adult children coping with aging parents and estranged siblings.
Helping you understand what troubles you and gain insight toward positive change is the heart of my practice. I work with adults, individually and in couples, and with families facing the challenges of life transitions and aging. Whether yours are new dilemmas or longstanding struggles, a life-changing event that was planned or unexpected, painful grief over a new or old loss, or a knotty issue in search of solution, all can be opportunities for growth. Every life is a story. You want to make yours better. I work as a partner with you in that process.

By the good fortune of some unique pre- and post-grad training, I have become what people now call a ‘ trauma -informed’ therapist.
A therapist for the last 23 years, I spent the twenty preceding years in large firm law practice in SF, DC and NY. At almost. the last minute, i grabbed hold of my life, and turned it upside down. This turned out very well. Now, every day I get to delight in working with people in a frank and open way, with the aim of changing their lives for the better. Life is difficult — there’s no way around that. But when you and your therapist are a good fit, the therapy relationship can expand your world, deepen your knowledge of yourself, improve your relationships, and release you to a life you can enjoy more fully and freely.

Just as you don't click with every person you meet in the world, you won't mesh with every therapist. And I want to make sure you have a good experience in therapy! As a career changer myself, I work well with professionals who are feeling stuck in certain areas of their life and can't seem to figure it out with the same tools they have used in the past. I love to assist people in mobilizing strengths they already have (like being analytical) and building new capacities (like sitting with tough emotions and listening to the body). Trauma , relationships, family dynamics, identity, and sexual concerns come up a lot in our sessions.

We all have stories we have been carrying with us based on our lived experience. I aim to help my clients dig deeper into these personal narratives, to understand how our past may be affecting our present and keeping us from the future we want. I have specialized training and experience in working with trauma and providing treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, military adjustment, occupational stress, and other major life changes. Racial trauma and issues related to cultural identity, such as those specific to 1st and 2nd generation immigrants, are some of the particular topics I would help us explore.

I believe in the resiliency of people. Whether you face a relational issue, loss of a loved one, trauma , or ongoing mental health concern, I can work with you to create positive change and move you through a healing process by identifying your existing coping skills and building on your strengths and community. I have a collaborative approach-and expect that we will work together to create change. I like to work with adults as well as children and families as I believe that variety makes me a better therapist. When working with children, I work closely with the family.

Many of my clients struggle with childhood trauma , relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and/or disordered eating and body image concerns.
Many of us find ourselves struggling with persistent feelings, patterns, and reactions that hold us back. Perhaps you’ve tried psychotherapy before, and you have a good understanding of your problems but they haven’t changed. Or perhaps you 'know' that you are capable, worthy, and appreciated by others, but at your core, you don't feel this way. I believe that much of the time, symptoms develop from negative life experiences that have not been fully resolved.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
