Difficulties with intimacy are prevalent. People are pessimistic and frightened of marriage. Levels of anxiety, depression, and "pushing away" defense mechanisms are increasing and we tend to seek the emotionally familiar. We fall in love based on our earliest experiences with bonding, or lack of it. Thus, if these feelings are based upon aberrations of bonding, we are constantly drawn to those who cannot bond & connect. If you continually repeat the same mistakes in your life you may be emotionally "stuck" due to these early feelings.
I believe that all of us suffer from some difficulties with intimacy. Unless we had perfect parents, we were all exposed to some feelings that may have been damaging to us. I have found that when patients express a desire for a better marriage, it is more therapeutic to see them individually, AND as a couple. My patients find this method very effective.
In my work with couples, I see both parties individually, as well as occasionally together. The reason for this is that this way I can get to know both parties as individuals and understand what difficulties and distortions they may be bringing into the relationship.
