Hello, my name is Dan Bjierke and I have been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California for 33 years. Initially, I was accepted into a clinical sports psychology program where I intended to specialize in working with team dynamics and elite performers. When the program folded, I was introduced to the field of marriage and family therapy and the importance of having a strong sense of self-esteem as a basis for creating healthy relationships. In 1993, when I was researching books to create a 12-week self-esteem class, I found a book by Martin Seligman titled “Learned Optimism.”
The launch of positive psychology can be traced back to a speech given by Martin Seligman in 1998 when he served as the President of the American Psychological Association (APA).
I am also certified as an Applied Positive Psychology Specialist which focuses on the scientific study of positive human functioning and the factors that contribute to well-being and flourishing. It focuses on understanding and promoting individuals' strengths, positive emotions, resilience, and overall psychological well-being.
