My practice is dedicated to assist individuals, couples, and families by empowering them to overcome adversities. Entering therapy is a step in demonstrating strength and resiliency. I have an appreciation for this strength and consider it an important part of the therapy process. I approach each client with respect on where they are at the time when entering therapy. When personal growth is felt and experienced it can be rewarding and life altering. It is my intention and responsibility to be an active listener, give thoughtful and educational input for growth and healing at the pace and needs of each client.

People are confronted with challenges at various times in their life cycle. Despite their best efforts, they may feel stuck, have relational difficulties and experience feelings of confusion, sadness, anxiety, depression, isolation, alienation, anger or other unpleasant emotions.

Health and healing are journeys. We are always honored when clients ask us along on their journey towards recovery from the trauma or devastation robbing them of the ability to trust themselves or others. I enjoy combining the Mind Body Soul connection in therapy to create balance in all areas. We often focus on our thoughts and actions and forget about our body and spiritual components. Being able to integrate all aspects of ourselves leads to greater healing especially if we have experienced trauma. Reconnection to the body is an important part of healing and learning to listen to what is is telling us. Spirituality is one aspect of therapy I enjoy most and helping others find their spiritual center along with aiding those who feel "highly sensitive" (empathic) in being able to function and thrive.

I have a soft spot for people who are quirky and unconventional, as I am. I welcome free spirits and those who yearn to express their authentic selves. Life can be more satisfying when one lives for what brings joy, not approval. I love to work with people who already have some insight into their issues and are ready to explore their emotions, thoughts and behaviors in greater depth and try new behaviors - that's why I do so well counseling fellow therapists. I encourage my clients to experience and understand their emotions, rather than regarding feelings as nasty symptoms that they want to get rid of.

Everyone deserves a chance at improving themselves. Therapy is the journey of self-discovery and along the way you can self-heal. My approach as your therapist is to guide you in your self-discovery and we learn together where the healing within yourself needs to begin. You are the expert of yourself and what you need. As your therapist, I am here to provide you with a warm, welcoming, and respected environment that allows you to feel open and vulnerable. We will create short-term goals in doable doses that will promote the growth you desire within yourself. I am currently working with adults and teens virtually.

We all want to find happiness and fulfillment in life, however, our experiences and circumstances often feel in the way of acheiving happiness. Through therapy, we will explore how your personal barriers, history, anxiety, and moods, prevent you from finding the peace you are seeking. Using a strengths based perspective, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and various therapeutic exercises, I will work with you to find your voice and inspiration; creating the life you want. With a strong focus on offering yourself compassion and grace, I will encourage you to develop a deep sense of self-love, which makes all things possible.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
