The stories that we tell about ourselves and our experiences are our realities, and these realities shape how we perceive our past, current, and future experiences in our lives. Sometimes, these stories do not allow us to feel the level of happiness and fulfillment in which we desire due to problems dominating our stories. It is my goal to support individuals, families, couples, and groups in developing a sense of hope and possibility that were not previously there. This hope provides space for unique possible outcomes where these individuals can develop a story that includes happiness and life fulfillment.

As a culturally diverse and culturally sensitive family therapist/counselor, I am guided by three critical principles: awareness, positive regard and empathy.
"Every Conversation Matters." Counselors facilitate healing through a process of genuine dialogue with their clients. In a world of challenges or going through a life transition can feel overwhelming. These challenges may bring about anxiety, hopelessness, and a sense of isolation, but you do not have to face them alone. Having a safe space to process everyday obstacles-whether from past or present challenges, and identifying solutions that works with a person that is nonjudgmental, and will help you to get to the root of the problem so you can begin to rebuild your life or your relationship is what makes all the difference.

As a culturally sensitive therapist, I take the time to understand my client’s goals and needs, strengths and challenges, and what they need to feel comfortable, supported and understood.
Welcome to Coach & Counsel LLC. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is a powerful agent of change and that healing begins only in a space that is truly safe for self-exploration. In my practice, I work collaboratively with my clients; I believe that therapists are the experts of the process, and that clients are the experts of their own experience. I aim to create an empathic, compassionate and nonjudgmental environment, so that you can be unafraid to express any areas of yourself that have been tucked away.

I specialize in working with LGBT clients, adult ADHD, depression and anxiety, intergenerational patterns, couples and family work. Clients who come to me would be receiving support from a holistic perspective; our lives don't occur in a vacuum, so neither should our mental health. A client who came to me would be aiming both to address concerns in the present; whether those be relational or their own behavior or thoughts, as well as to help understand the patterns and history that impact how they see the world, so that they can identify where to make changes.

Problems and challenges are real and difficult, but for each of us they may be challenging for different reasons. Sometimes we are stuck in a problem because of the ways in which our past experiences, relationships, traumas, and families have shaped our feelings, thoughts, and physiological reactions. Part of our work together involves creating space for new situations and understandings from which a new solution to a problem can evolve. While sometimes that work is brief, it can take a bit more time when we are looking at lifelong patterns, issues related to family, dynamics, and attachment, or different types of trauma.

There is no universal reason to enter therapy. Everyone arrives in their own time, moves at their own pace, and seeks different outcomes. I approach therapy with the lens that every person deserves a space to heal with self-determination and empathy. Whether you are navigating emotions of overwhelm, grief, conflict, worry, or harm, I aim to address each feeling with care and thoughtfulness. I want to know what brings you here now and how you envision therapy as a tool for your personal growth.

Sometimes we come to therapy because we are experiencing something specific and other times something just feels off. Any time is a good time (I know I have to say that, but I really believe it). I also believe that our experiences occur within the impact of systems (relationships, work, family, communities, school, society etc.). The more we uncover our understanding of how these systems interact, the better we understand our world and ourselves. This helps us disrupt patterns and deepen groundedness and joy. Clients tell me that our work together helps them see themselves more fully and therefore see others more fully.

The Phoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy is named after the legendary figure of the phoenix that dies and is reborn from its own ashes – it is a symbol of transformation and resilience. The phenomenon of growing after experiencing trauma has been labeled “Post-Traumatic Growth”. This is exactly what we help our clients cultivate in their lives. There are many reasons people reach out to a therapist. Sometimes, people feel stuck in their current lives, unable to realize their goals in their personal relationships or in their work. Sometimes people feel there is unfinished business to attend to from their past and they want to explore these experiences in a nonjudgemental space. Sometimes people are struggling to answer essential questions about themselves, how they show up in the world, and how they find meaning in the lives they lead. Sometimes people need someone to talk to. Whatever you are seeking to accomplish with therapy, I want to partner with you for the journey.

Do you seek a deeper understanding of why you do the things you do? Are you struggling but you’re not exactly sure why or what to do about it? Taking the step to explore a better understanding of yourself in therapy, is empowering, purposeful, and courageous. Through an authentic connection and openness, I believe change, growth, and healing can occur. Together, we identify areas that are impacting your thinking, behavior, and relationships, seek out and examine their origin, find meaning, and work towards achieving and practicing new, healthier ways of relating and understanding.

The human experience is complex and layered. It is often taken for granted and underestimated. In our profession, it is a privilege to have access to such complexities; a privilege to witness the moment when despair transforms into hope and futility no longer exists. Humans are vast and exploration is limitless. As a psychologist, I would be remiss by engaging my work without intentionality, humility, and culturally appropriate care. As someone with marginalized identities, I find value in reflecting in the moment with clients. I use a multicultural counseling model to address the unique needs of clients of color and LGBTQ+ folks.

I believe in the power of therapy as a space to connect and to name one's truths and desires aloud. I provide clients with an empathic, nonjudgmental space where they can explore the stories they have learned about themselves over time. Much of my work is focused around the intersections of identity, trauma, and mental health, and I am committed to exploring the ways that race, gender, and other social identities show up in the world and in the therapy room.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
