My intention is to provide trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care that is mindful of the role of privilege/power within the therapeutic relationship.
I am now licensed in PA, NJ, DE and FL. Are you looking to gain a better understanding and acceptance of yourself? Do you need support but worry about “bothering” others with your concerns? Do you want to take back control from the problems you feel are ruling your life? These things are achievable when therapy includes the two most important aspects of successful treatment: hope and an authentic connection with an empathetic therapist who sees, accepts and validates the true you. I work with both individuals and couples, doing both standard psychotherapy and EMDR.

My constant intention is to provide culturally sensitive and affirming care, as well as a safe and affirming space for you to explore your strengths and challenges.
My clients come to me because they want to deepen and strengthen their relationships - not just with each other, but with themselves. They want to understand the family and societal systems that shaped them into who they are today, and to heal old wounds and trauma so that they can move forward from a place of strength, healing, and connection. Many of my clients exist at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities, and have struggled to find a therapist who will understand and not further stigmatize their identities, and who is committed to unlearning systems of oppression. I seek to provide a healing space for them.

Currently accepting new clients. Do you feel stuck? Perhaps you used to feel confident and capable, and now you feel like you can't get any traction. I work with people who are used to have the answers, and now find themselves at a loss - smart tweens who are struggling with their emotions, smart teenagers who are struggling with their families, smart adults who feel like there's more for them in life. People who are creative and hard-working often find me to be a good fit, including executives, those who are in non-traditional jobs or jobs with unconventional structures, and those who are in non-traditional relationships..

When was the last time you took care of you? As a person that’s taking care of everyone else and the endless task list, you don’t remember the last time you watered your own garden (or where the heck the watering can even is). And even though you are really doing an amazing job taking care of everyone around you, you’re exhausted, burnt out, and wondering when this drought is going to stop. Oh, and by the way, you ARE allowed to fill your own water tank…without feeling guilty and while still caregiving or helping others heal around you. What if you could find a little peace in your day as you do all the 879 things on your list?

I am very passionate about working with children and adolescents who are questioning/embracing their gender and/or sexuality. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, ASD, open/nonmonogamous relationships, suicidality, or many other issues, I would love to work with you. I want children and adolescents to feel autonomous and in control of their own therapy. I believe that the client is the expert on themselves and my job is to learn from them, while contributing with my own skillset.

You fantasize daily about being a person who can let things just roll off their shoulders and get on with life. Instead, you spend your time painstakingly reviewing that awkward conversation with your coworker or beating yourself up for turning down the invitation to your kind-of-friend’s birthday party. Everyone else seems to be able to handle social interactions smoothly and keep up with the frenetic pace of life, so the problem must be you. Or, could it be what happened to you? The past you thought you’d “gotten over” is starting to show up more in your thoughts and dreams. You’re on edge, frustrated by your overreactions.

I know starting therapy can be hard. I hope sharing about who I am as a therapist helps clarify if I feel like a good fit for you. Therapy is a relationship that centers you. I view connection and authenticity as strengths. I will take you and your needs seriously while celebrating your joy. I center consent and empowerment, depathologize responses to harm (systemic or otherwise), and value lived experience. I am non-judgmental, interested, understanding, and trust your self-knowledge. I show up attentively, with warmth and care. I believe in those I work with and am excited for what you will create for yourself.

Why were we taught algebra, but never taught about healthy relationships, delightful sex, grief, depression, or loving our bodies? Why do we fall into the same traps we fell into yesterday? Why do we go back to behaviors that we know are bad for us? I work with folks who feel stuck in painful cycles. I have special training in relationships, sex, and grief. I’ll give you tools & hold you accountable. My specialties are relationships, anxiety, grief, men's issues, queer issues, compulsive masturbation, porn literacy, low desire, ED & teens.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when? (Hillel, 2000 years ago). I'm not content with you feeling accepted and supported. I want you to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to live congruently with your personal values and not with fear of judgment or failure. I want you to be able to nurture and comfort yourself, but also to motivate and push yourself to act in your own best interests. l want you to attach yourself to something greater than yourself and to lessen the time you spend worrying about the future or reliving the past.

There is no universal reason to enter therapy. Everyone arrives in their own time, moves at their own pace, and seeks different outcomes. I approach therapy with the lens that every person deserves a space to heal with self-determination and empathy. Whether you are navigating emotions of overwhelm, grief, conflict, worry, or harm, I aim to address each feeling with care and thoughtfulness. I want to know what brings you here now and how you envision therapy as a tool for your personal growth.

I see myself as a life consultant and partner in change. Clients working with me are tired of feeling stuck in behaviors or emotional ruts that don't afford them freedom to live well. Trying new things, taking risks and experimenting with new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving are all part of the coaching. The client who sees me is ready, willing and, even if a bit scared, ready to find a centered self. I work both through talk and experiential, intersectional models. I am proficient in helping folks with grief, anxiety, body image issues and most life transitions. Life is hard and support and challenge can make it easier.

I pride myself in tailoring my therapeutic approach to each client. My goal is to be as open as possible with my clients in continuing to look at why a specific treatment modality is being used. Transparency is an especially important part of the process. I also enjoy using humor as a way to build therapeutic rapport and as a tool for healing through self-empowerment.

I aim to provide a warm, nonjudgmental, safe environment that will support your innate ability to heal and grow. I view therapy as a collaborative partnership between you and I, and I highly value building deep, genuine connections with the people with whom I work. Through connection, and a gentle balance of nurture and challenge, lasting change can occur. Many of my patients begin therapy feeling stuck, anxious, unhappy, struggling with effects of trauma or loss, or desiring deeper connections in their relationships. Therapy can help you understand more about yourself and what you can do to feel better.

Just because you carry it well, doesn't mean it isn't heavy. You deserve more than just being seen. The world is a scary and ever-changing place. Dealing with uncertainty, transition, and challenges puts stress on relationships, and on personal values. Curiosity, mindfulness, and a dialectical approach makes it possible to find meaning, and even pleasure, in some of the most bleak situations, with the right support.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
