I specialize providing therapy for women who are Arab/Asian American or people of color. I am a first-generation Muslim Arab American, born and raised in NYC. In my early years and adulthood, accessing resources and services that felt inclusive and culturally sensitive was challenging. My own journey in healing has sparked a desire to provide culturally sensitive care to people from all walks of life.

I use these tools to craft an approach that is rooted in a strengths-based and culturally sensitive framework, helping you identify and leverage your strengths to overcome life's challenges.
Life is anything but a linear experience and sometimes you might feel lost. You may find yourself feeling confused about your choices, or struggle to understand your feelings. My role is to help you understand your emotional framework and how to get to where you truly want to go. I specialize in working with clients from diverse backgrounds who are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief and loss, school issues and life transitions. I’m also bilingual and speak Spanish. My goal is always to help you develop skills that will allow you to cope independently after our time together ends.

I am happy to see you via video sessions (only) during this time. My name is Hebah (pronounced Hib-a), and I am excited you found my profile. Therapy is about discussing your problems, but that’s only the beginning. When you develop a relationship with an empathic, attuned therapist, you will find your inherent strength, heal old emotional wounds, discover new ways to solve problems and change how you live your life. I am a bilingual (English/Arabic) therapist with over ten years of psychotherapy experience. I use a straightforward, gentle, respectful, non-blaming, culturally sensitive approach to counseling.

Recognizing your individuality to create a culturally sensitive space is my focus and extremely important to me.
You may be searching for ways to understand your past, connect with the present, and make sense of your future. Therapy isn't a quick fix; it demands time, dedication, and the courage to open up about your truths. Confronting and embracing raw emotions that might come up for you during sessions are all part of the process. Committing to growth is about rediscovering self-love and finding the strength to heal and move forward.

I operate from a culturally sensitive and anti-oppressive lens.
We all go through things, and in therapy I can help you confront the difficulties you are trying to manage. I specialize in providing individual, couples, and family therapy. I have experience working with clients of all age groups across the lifespan. Some of these issues may be couples' communication issues, grief/bereavement, life transitions, and discord in personal and professional relationships to name a few. We tend to put others before ourselves and neglect our own needs in the process, including seeking therapy. Let me show you how to break these cycles in your therapy journey.

Are you struggling with anxiety, depression, or relationship issues? Any of these problems can be difficult to navigate especially without any emotional support. Together we can work through whatever is prohibiting you from living a life of peace, self-knowledge, and fulfillment. While I will be here to gently guide you through the process I am a strong believer that each client knows what they need deep inside.

Showing up for yourself is incredibly important, however prioritizing your own needs is often easier said than done. It can be especially challenging if you already feel stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, and/or lost. Through the therapeutic process, together we can navigate life transitions, explore difficult emotions, resolve conflicts, build on strengths, enhance coping skills, increase self-satisfaction, and gain new insights.

Now accepting new clients in my practice as of 12/18/23 - If you've experienced trauma that caused you to suppress, avoid, and close yourself off from the world - to deny your needs & make yourself small - I feel you. I tried coping with trauma by turning against myself, and it only increased the shame and isolation. I'm sure there's a part of you who is curious about finding another way, who realizes you are more than your struggles. Together, we can experiment with changing your relationship to your anxiety, OCD, trauma, and identity concerns, so you can reconnect with what you need to live a rich and fulfilling life.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
