As a licensed creative arts therapist (drama, art, music, movement, play. creative writing) my skills are especially suitable for clients who have been through levels of trauma (domestic violence, divorce, dating abuse, PTSD, grief and loss, depression, self-harm, anxiety. etc.). In addition, I work with high-functioning kids/teens on the autism spectrum. I have found that the visual and physical work of role-playing, scene-work, improvisation, simple drawings, and video work increases their skills to recognize facial cues and feelings. Through play, these clients build self-esteem, social skills, deepen their emotional range and gain empathy.

Is the chaos of life piling up around you? Perhaps you have gone through something stressful and can’t figure out how to get through it. If so, you are in the right place, because therapy can help with that and so much more. I aim to provide a compassionate and non-judgmental space so that we can build a strong therapeutic alliance to allow for a better understanding of the challenges we will be facing together. Ultimately, our goal will be to minimize the impact of problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so that you are able to transition your life to a space with more positive and fulfilling experiences.

If you are struggling with issues related to feeling overwhelmed and stressed with life, work, family and/or your relationships, you need to talk with a professional. Working with an objective and professionally trained psychologist will empower you to move forward and be more productive, less stressed and happier. Sometimes, people feel alone and think that others will not understand their struggles. People often show improvements by having someone they can trust and who will be able to see their perspective without judgement. I understand the human experience and help people make changes to improve their quality of life. Call now.

Choosing a therapist can be a daunting task. I work toward providing an atmosphere of respect, support, trust and caring which can lead to a greater potential for self understanding, healing, relief and the opportunity to see and make different choices. In private practice for over 20 years, I have a varied practice, working with individuals, couples and families with a wide range of difficulties. Areas of particular specialty include working with those who have experienced trauma, relational difficulties, anxiey, depression, and issues of childhood and adolescence.

I will be a companion on the journey to assist with self-exploration in a non-judgmental, person-centered, trauma-focused, culturally sensitive manner that identifies the strengths that have assisted you thus far.
My ideal client would be someone who is sick and tired of being sick and tired of struggling mentally. This person would have years of experience with close relationship failure and consistent loss, have seen or been a victim of domestic violence, been verbally or physically abused as a child, and or experienced poverty. They will have either ignored the signs or continued to survive because of fear of what others would think. The person will need to understand what they are experiencing is not their fault, and their goal is to break free of the cycle that has continued for so long.

It's time to totally shake it up. Forget what you think you know about therapy or what you need to do to change your life... Making that level of change means confronting Truth and fundamentally changing yourself. I won't sugarcoat it and I certainly won't lie to you: I will tell you what you need to know and guide you toward making the proper choices in your life. And I'll prove it to you right now: I tell you outright that I can't fix you. No one can. The only person that has that sort of power over you IS you. This involves hard choices in learning how to manage your life. And I will stand beside you every step of the way.

I strive to provide a safe space to work through emotions and find effective ways to manage them. I help people process the ways that our past experiences and current reactions affect the decisions that we make in order to promote healthy change and understanding of ourselves and our patterns. Oftentimes, we are not aware of the underlying things that influence our gut reactions which can create a barrier to us meeting the goals we set for ourselves. Counseling is a way to help you understand yourself better and to break down those barriers that stop you from moving forward.

So many people are coping with diverse issues now, it’s no longer “just” depression and anxiety. These feelings are complicated and exacerbated by health, employment, family and sexuality concerns. Traumas great and small can arise and all are worthy of therapeutic support.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
