We all tell stories to and about ourselves. The stories we tell can empower us, and sometimes we find that our stories do not serve us. At its core, therapy is a safe space for you to tell your story. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I value the story each person has to tell. My compassionate and non-judgmental approach allows me to collaborate with you, to understand your experiences and where you may be feeling overwhelmed or stuck. I will support you in the process of gaining insight, in order to facilitate meaningful change. I strive to build a strong bond with my clients, to help you feel more at ease within yourself.

I provide behavioral treatment of sleep disorders, especially insomnia and sleep phase disorders, utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, CBT-I. If you are 16 years of age or older and have difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep, or you wake up earlier than you'd like, CBT-I is a scientifically proven intervention that you may want to consider. Treatment typically lasts 3-6 sessions over 1-3 months. My practice is an online, tele-health practice for adolescents, adults and older adults. I am part of PsyPact, treating patients on-line throughout the U.S.

Thinking of therapy? Ask us for the first session free. At IPG, we are proud pioneers in gender-affirming psychotherapy for trans and gender gon-conforming people. We view gender diversity as normal, not a mental illness. We're likely more experienced than any other practice in New Jersey, with roughly 20% of our clients being gender-diverse in some way, though of course we work with other communities. In 2019 we were awarded a PROUD Award recognizing our decades of work with the trans community. All of our NJ locations (Highland Park, Jersey City, Freehold) have therapists who work with trans/GNC adults, adolescents, and children.

Life can be challenging. We all go through difficult times, get confused, feel stressed, experience loss. Some of us seek therapy because we suffer from depression, anxiety, illness and relationship problems; others may simply feel 'stuck" in some way. As a therapist with over 30 years of experience, my goal is to create a safe and supportive environment to guide clients to explore their needs, identify their strengths, gain a better understanding of what is and is not working in their lives, and to provide strategies to help them solve problems and achieve a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

You may feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or exhausted right now. You may have challenges in your personal or professional relationships. You may be struggling to find a sense of purpose. Imagine what it would be like to have someone really listen to your story.

The things we experience affect us more than we think. Maybe you felt neglected as a child, are experiencing bullying, lost a family member, or are in an emotionally and/or physically abusive relationship. Maybe you have signs of unhealed trauma (depression, anxiety, low self-worth, relationship trouble, substance abuse, etc.) but don't realize you've experienced trauma. You could feel uncertain about why you feel this way and want to explore that. Trauma is very subjective. Every person is affected by and reacts to adverse events differently. This can lead you to feeling hopeless for the future and can be incredibly isolating.

I believe that stress affects us on all levels: mind, body, and spirit. Whether it is depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, loss, or life transitions, a person needs to be treated on all levels. Additionally, each person experiences the interaction between the three in a unique way, and treatment must reflect that difference between clients. In addition to a doctorate in clinical psychology, I have advanced training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (www.sensorimotorpsychotherapy.org) and EMDR (www.emdr.com), both mind/body psychotherapies.

We all want happiness. But at some point in our lives we may feel stuck or face certain challenges and having the support of a caring therapist can help you understand more clearly what is going on and create new ways to think about yourself and your relationship with others. Therapy should be as unique as you are. While struggle is universal, people respond differently to different types of interventions; so I will tailor your treatment to respond to your specific needs, personality, situation, relationship, and comfort level. In addition to therapy I also provide Life Coaching.

If painful experiences were met with confusing or anxious responses from others or described in manners that did not respond to emotional needs, then a child or individual would likely cope with difficulties by disconnecting from the threatening emotional meanings. We need another at times, or search for a healing process. If you have been struggling with strong feelings or a particular situation, it is time to get help. You can find the way through fears, loss or other struggles. I am here to support you through your struggles, through personal hardships, finding truths or make sense of confusion in your mind or life.

Hello! Taking the first step into therapy can be a difficult one, and I want to commend you for taking that first step. We all face many different stressors in our lives. Between work, school, our friends and families and other relationships, it can become overwhelming to deal with it all. As we learn and grow, we may also discover new emotions or parts of ourselves that we are unfamiliar with, or we may recognize issues and struggles we have pushed off for far too long.

People are helped most by considering all aspects of their lives, their strengths as well as the areas giving them problems. Therefore, I will treat you as a whole person, not just as a diagnosis. We will work together to understand how your past is affecting your current situation, and get to the bottom of your issues, for achieving deep, lasting changes. Speaking freely and without inhibitions with your therapist is essential and I work to provide a warm, safe environment for you to do so. I also offer group therapy, which is very effective when combined with individual sessions.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
