Footprints was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities were confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. Footprints began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

My job is to help you step into your personal power. Life can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming. Shifting thoughts and behaviors that no longer serve you can lead a more satisfying and joyful life. Such emotions as grief, depression, anxiety, anger and fear often block you from enjoying a full life. Changing thoughts that manifest negative emotional states, learning more effective communication methods, stopping addictive or self destructive behaviors, and learning stress management techniques are some areas where I offer assistance. I specialize in the treatment of trauma from childhood abuse, as well as PTSD that is the result of other traumatic experiences.

I am happy to see you via video sessions (only) during this time. My name is Hebah (pronounced Hib-a), and I am excited you found my profile. Therapy is about discussing your problems, but that’s only the beginning. When you develop a relationship with an empathic, attuned therapist, you will find your inherent strength, heal old emotional wounds, discover new ways to solve problems and change how you live your life. I am a bilingual (English/Arabic) therapist with over ten years of psychotherapy experience. I use a straightforward, gentle, respectful, non-blaming, culturally sensitive approach to counseling.

Each crisis in our lives is an opportunity for healing and growth. My primary approach is relational psychoanalytic, meaning I help patients use the healing power of the therapeutic relationship to uncover and work on their deepest conflicts. An interactive and empathic therapist, I offer advice and support when needed, and I share my own experiences when I think they will be helpful. Though I have extensive, in-depth training, I rely greatly on intuition and humor in my work.

I believe you already have the answer to your problem. If you’re unaware of that answer, my job is to help you uncover it. If you’re conscious of it, my job is to help you accept it. In both cases, we work together as you decide what you’re going to do next. Either way, you are the expert on your own life. I ask the questions and help you sift through your options.

Over the years in my work with children, couples, families, as well as those struggling with substance use and other difficulties, I think about rocks. Specifically, rocks that weigh us down emotionally, due to difficult childhood experiences, troubling relationships, and from events or challenges one faces in their lives. Many clients come into counseling with the belief that they are inherently flawed. Inevitably, during our work together we uncover some of the rocks that weigh them down emotionally. The resulting awareness can be quite effective in relieving or reducing one from those old self-defeating messages.

As a Queer/LGBTQ individual who has worked extensively within my community, I have learned that everyone has their own idea of what it means to suffer, but we need not approach it alone nor without help. First and foremost, I believe that individual needs and each relationship is unique; this informs the work I do with clients. If you are not feeling seen or heard in your relationships with others, be they romantic or otherwise, we can work together to build the needed skills for you or you and your partner to better navigate needs. Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
