Life can be hard, and for many, the last several years have been particularly hard. Sometimes it is traumatic and tragic, other times it's overwhelming and confusing, and sometimes it just feels plain blah. Over the years, counseling has played an important role in my own life, helping me navigate the ups and downs. In turn, I have had the chance to walk with people during some of the darkest and most challenging seasons of their lives. My hope is to continue to journey with others and be a healing presence in their lives.

I've been in practice 25 yrs - with individuals/couples & families -- kids 6+, many teens, college students & adults. I'm shamelessly informal -- no ties or pressed shirts here!. The office is quite unique - - very large, ultra comfy, w/MANY natural oddities... slightly chaotic -- like life! Good strong coffee/tea/soda & munchies always available. Pets welcome. I'm adopted myself, a licensed foster parent, & work with trauma and attachment. I have a multi-cultural family & lived abroad (Africa). I do co-parenting therapy & am also very familiar w/court systems, working with Dr.'s, lawyers, schools and custody issues.

My personal theoretical foundation is not limited to one approach. I believe it is necessary for counselors to be adaptive. Every client is different and our responses and approaches should be equally diverse. One person may need a cognitive behavioral approach whereas another would be more responsive to brief counseling. This eclectic approach will be applied to all clients. Techniques will vary between clients to best meet the individual client's needs.

Child Counselor, Registered Play Therapist (RPT), Infant Family Specialist, (IMH-E(II)). Counseling helps children & families work on their concerns, relationships, behaviors, and feelings. As a therapist who specializes in working with children, I often use therapeutic play (Play Therapy). Play is expression, communication, and learning for children. It is by using play therapy that I connect with kiddos, help children learn new skills, and join with them in processing their life experiences. It is my goal to work together with you toward enhancing your child's self-esteem, relationships, emotional health, and inner strength.

I am a native Spanish speaker and strongly believe in the value of incorporating culture and language to connect with my Spanish-speaking clients. My background consists of working with various age groups, such as children, adolescents, young adults, and families. My goal is to provide a nonjudgmental, multicultural, compassionate environment that will promote growth and change. I have experience working in schools, inpatient, and community-based. Carolyn has been working with children and families for over 25 years. She specializes in treating children and families and provides parenting support for caregivers with children/adolescents who have behavioral health concerns and conducts individual and family therapy. Carolyn also has expertise with Highly Sensitive People (HSP), including children (HSC). This is a normal biological trait in personality and physiology inherited by about 20% of the population. HSP's have sensitive nervous systems and feel things deeply, notice more in their environment and are easily overstimulated by sensory input in their environment.

Life is a tapestry. It can be something so beautiful, but intricate causing frustration and heartbreak that lies beneath the surface, and sometimes sections can go uncompleted. In my 15 years of experience, my role is to work with you toward addressing the various issues and the complex nature of what can come and does come. My experience working with various populations have allowed me to incorporate multiple approaches and techniques that assist my clients in overcoming their struggles. Areas of specialization include working with children and adolescents, women's issues, blended families, trauma, and academic underachievement.

My education consists of a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Hispanic Studies from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Aquinas College. Currently, I am a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC) in the State of Michigan, where I have the ability to diagnose and treat clinical mental health disorders. Through my limited licensure period, I continuously receive supervision from a fully Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), where I am able to improve my ability to treat and diagnose my clients.
