My treatment approaches are grounded in a holistic, relational approach that is strength-based, solution-focused, culturally sensitive, trauma, and compassion focused.
As a dually licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Alcohol and Drug Counselor, the focus of my work is with adolescents (Ages 14-17) who are experiencing issues centered on complex trauma, addiction, and mental health disorders. I also offer counseling to the emerging adulthood population (Ages 18-29) who may be finding challenges navigating transitional events such as leaving home, finishing education, finding employment, redefining relationships with parents, and identity exploration.

Just like the gardener I am in my spare time, I wish to nurture your individual growth and support you to adapt and thrive in the garden of your life. I wish to understand who you are, find your strengths, feed your unique wants and needs, and root out the problems and issues that are getting in the way of your ability to blossom. Much like the roots of a plant, I believe that digging in and creating a safe place of acceptance, warmth, trust and empathy (the soil) provides the groundwork to explore challenges and aspirations in one’s life. In partnership, and with consistent care and intentional choices, your life can flourish.

My preference is that you contact me by email. If you call me, you MUST leave me a message, as I get so many unknown calls. I have 30 + years of experience working with people of all ages dealing with every possible issue, including trauma such as childhood abuse, sexual assault, and severe accidents. Though not a veteran myself, I was an Air Force "brat" and know how hard it is to be up-rooted every 2 years. I have traveled widely and appreciate cultural diversity. I like to help people make the right decisions for themselves regarding issues like staying in or leaving college or a marriage, coming out, transitioning.

We live in a complex world. Many of us can feel overwhelmed by the layers of stressors and demands upon us. While I do not possess the answers, I have strength in asking appropriate, pertinent questions, as well as opening the exploration of aspects of oneself that may be hidden from view. I work hard and ask the client to do the same. Through relationship we build safety and respect. This permits the bravery it takes to enter into the psychotherapeutic process. Ultimately, it is here that change can occur.

For many of us, 2020 was a catalyst year starting with the pandemic, political conflict, grief and loss issues across the nation. It was a collective impact. For so many individuals, including myself, lives were uprooted, and the adjustment period was difficult and disconcerting as nothing seemed familiar anymore. Many have been dealing with relationships and marriages ending, loss of jobs, loss of homes, losing loved ones who have passed on, physical health deteriorating and so much more. Old traumas seemed to have resurfaced, depression/anxiety increasing, loneliness, and finding balance or a sense of self seems to evade us.

Life can be really amazing. It can also feel equally challenging and confusing. Work concerns. Relationship worries. A desire to feel fulfilled, but feeling overwhelmed instead. We often fear that if life feels hard, we must be doing something wrong. But the reality is sometimes life IS really difficult...and we feel it. With more than twenty years of experience, I support individuals (frequently women) navigating anxiety and depression, personal and professional stressors and transitions, as well as those seeking more healthful and satisfying work/life (and self/others) “balance.”

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
