I specialize in adult individuals struggling with all types of issues: life transitions, depression and anxiety, addiction, bi-polar, OCD, and more. I enjoy working with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. I employ a psychodynamic framework with most of my clients, however, I utilizes many cognitive-behavioral techniques and principles, as well. I especially enjoy the integration of Christian spirituality and psychology, though I welcome any one from any background. My approach to the therapeutic alliance is gentle and playful, yet direct. Therapy can be a fascinating collaborative journey of discovery and self-awareness that can be hard but empowering and fun, like exercising or completing a task. I am experienced treating a variety of issues to include trauma and PTSD, life transitions, anger, anxiety, grief, depression, men's issues, life coaching, and peer and relationship counseling. Bad news, betrayal, loss and change can arrive unexpectedly and knock us off-center, leaving us feeling stuck and unsure of the next step.

"Emotional pain is not something that should be hidden away and never spoken about. There is truth in your pain, there is growth in your pain, but only if it's first brought out into the open" - Steven Aitchison. Life's challenges can create feelings of hopelessness, and even skew our sense of worth. You are not alone...I would love to join you on the journey towards healing and empowerment.

Often times, individuals and families struggle with issues beyond understanding or don't have an individual to provide an unbiased approach to life's problems. Sometimes those seeking therapy have a support system that doesn't know how to best assist in their issues. Some individuals don't have a support system and need help navigating isolation. Some couples want to feel heard, validated, and respected by their partner and struggle with communication. In all, therapy can provide a safe place for positive growth to occur as individuals, families, and couples work to achieve healthier approaches to a majority of life's problems.

I know that you have a "pretty good" life. Perhaps you have done some work in therapy before, and things are finally stable. Yet, you sometimes feel like you are playing a part, rather than embracing and expressing your authentic self. You may feel uncomfortable in your own skin, self-conscious, or like you are not "enough." You may struggle to find your authentic voice and honor your values in your relationships or career. Life circumstances, societal pressures, past trauma, depression, and anxiety can all create obstacles to experiencing inner peace, trust, and confidence.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
