I believe that psychotherapy is a collaborative process in which a safe and welcoming space is co-created. This space allows room to supportively explore-with curiosity and self-compassion-the patterns of interaction, behavior, and thoughts that might no longer serve their purpose. I am an accomplished clinician with over 15 years of direct experience. I began my professional career in San Francisco and have since relocated back to my roots in central Massachusetts. I have worked successfully with many clients with a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, strengths, challenges, and coping strategies.

Life can feel overwhelming. We live in a world full of uncertainty and upheaval. But our world also contains hope and possibility. If you have been struggling with stress, fear and worries, sadness and grief, or needing to heal in any way, therapy can help. During our time together I will work with you to foster a brave, safe space to explore your needs and goals, whether they are related to processing experiences from your past, navigating current areas where you might feel stuck, or identifying potential areas of growth. I approach my practice with warmth, compassion, understanding, wisdom, and a sense of humor.

I applaud you for considering therapy, as it can be a challenging decision and may invoke a variety of feelings. You may have experienced a traumatic event or series of events that continue to impact your life, you may be exploring your identity and personal belief systems, or you may be experiencing complex emotions that you'd like support in processing. I am passionate about working with trauma survivors, especially those within the LGBTQ community. Trauma is complex and unique to each survivor.

Our mental and emotional health is so important. Especially these days. Very simply... talking about things helps us. Talking to a professional about our thoughts, ideas, concerns, and hopes can help to make sense of things we feel do not always make sense.

Starting therapy may bring up a lot of thoughts and feelings, and your decision to seek therapy shows a commitment to living your best life. I believe in my work that restoring relationships with ourselves and our loved ones can help navigate the difficult times we live in. Finding freedom from worry and depression is work, but you are not alone on this journey. You may also be exploring your sexual or gender identity and looking for additional support. Your curiosity and interest in exploring these issues will help you succeed in reaching your goals for your best life.

I work with adults, adolescents, families and couples in a culturally sensitive way.
"Your present circumstances do not determine where you go, they merely determine where you start." Feelings of loss, shame, sadness and anxiety often keep us stuck in unhealthy patterns. I have a general practice focusing on the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse and impulse control disorders. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS), cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness and other coping strategies I guide clients forward, to health, wellness, safety and acceptance.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
