As parents, we all want our children to be happy well adjusted individuals who are taking steps toward reaching their full potential. So it goes without saying that one of the most difficult things to do is to watch our children struggle in school and feel powerless in knowing how to help them. I am a Resident in counseling currently working towards my licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor. My client speciality leans towards those who are disabled, chronically sick, or who have experienced grief and loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, and life altering events. I also help those in need aquire service dogs and/or emotional support animals.

I match treatment interventions based upon your needs, however I tend to use treatment approaches that are solution focused and trauma informed. I am a direct and active therapist using humor when appropriate. I utilize EMDR, Life Coaching, Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive-Behavioral approaches in my work.

I strive to create an environment to support children and adults, to improve their lives by having more enjoyable relationships. I like to provide my patients the required tools to succeed in life. I have loved to serve the community and use my natural ability to empathize. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in May 2015. Since my graduation, I have been performing psychological evaluations and therapy for patients of all ages, gathering a broad base of experience.

I focus on ambiguous grief to assist anyone struggling to identify and establish the role they want to have in their own lives and create sustainable change.

The Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care is a pastoral counseling center open to everyone. There is a place for you here— whether you practice a faith tradition or are searching, whether you are looking for support as you take the next steps in your life or you feel sad, stuck or unhappy. Our counselors are trained mental health professionals, many of whom are also practicing clergy. But we don’t preach: we listen. We offer counseling for children, families, couples, and adults including seniors. Group therapy services are also available.

It can feel like you are stuck, unmotivated, frustrated and don't have the energy to make the changes you desire or not being sure of what changes you need to make to live a fuller, more complete life. My philosophy of therapy is that individuals heal through the relationship they develop with an experienced therapist in a warm, accepting environment. Life can be difficult and we all develop ways to help us cope. Often the ways that we learn to cope can do more damage than good, over time. In these instances, it’s important to learn new ways of managing oneself in tough times. Therapy can help you learn alternative ways of coping and taking good care of yourself. It can also help to change any distorted perceptions you may have developed of yourself through past, difficult experiences.

Allison Bunch is a Licenced Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in helping couples and families with a special interest in Law Enforcement, First Responder, and Military families. The counselor has experience helping families dealing with career issues, family stress, parent/child conflict, behavioral issues, relationship difficulties, divorce/separation, co-parenting issues, and marital dischord. The counselor offers pre-marital counseling and has also designed a pre-marital program specifically for Law Enforcement, First Responder, and Military families.
