My treatment approach is integrative and personalized to my clients’ needs, focused on building a foundation of trust. I work with clients to identify underlying roots of problems and elicit existing and new strengths and resources. I prefer a holistic approach to treatment which, while based in a psychodynamic framework, draws from my specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, attachment based, trauma-informed and mindfulness modalities. I work with adults ranging from young adulthood through end of life, using a culturally-sensitive approach.

Hi, I'm Rebecca. Many of my clients are women and nonbinary folks in their 20s and 30s who are exploring their neurodivergence (usually Autism and/or ADHD) as an adult. They may already have a neurodivergent identity or be in the process of figuring out their experiences. Together, we explore their unique strengths, learn how to meet sensory and self-care needs, and address challenges that arise from living in a neurotypical world. As a late-identified neurodivergent person, I have found that embracing our neurodivergence can lead us on a powerful journey of self-discovery, joy, and connection with ourselves and others.

My clinical orientation primarily emphasizes psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy approaches and is rooted in relational and person-centric models. I have advanced training in psychodynamic approaches as a Fellow at the Boston Psychoanalysis Society and Institute. My style is eclectic and I derive techniques from a comprehensive range of approaches, including solution-focused, narrative, multicultural and expressive models of psychotherapy. I recognize that there are cultural limitations inherent to each of these approaches and endeavor to tailor the therapeutic experience to respect clients’ diverse backgrounds.

Many people view therapy as a place to go to FEEL better. My first aim is to help you LIVE better–which will likely enable you to feel more fulfilled. Clients describe me as compassionate, caring, and challenging. My approach combines my knowledge of psychological theories and techniques with my energetic and interactive style. Working together, we will identify the ways in which your unproductive thought, emotional, and behavioral patterns prevent you from living a life consistent with your values and from achieving your goals.

I love to work with clients from any and all backgrounds. I specialize in helping people deal with trauma and its aftermath. I work well with people who have been managing their trauma for a long time, sometimes without any help, but who suddenly decide they really want to overcome their trauma and start living the life they want. Don't be shy to come into therapy for the first time, or for the fiftieth, there is always something new and meaningful to be discovered in therapy.

I specialize in supporting those who are experiencing the unique, profound grief related to pregnancy loss (miscarriage, still birth, termination due to fetal anomaly, and early infant death). Additionally, I work with children in families who are impacted by perinatal loss through play therapy, and by helping parents to create a developmentally appropriate narrative for them.

Often, a significant source of suffering lies in thoughts and feelings that exist outside of our awareness and have not yet been able to find full expression. Psychotherapy offers the unusual opportunity to be listened to deeply and to learn to listen to ourselves in new ways. Exploring and developing insight into your inner life can lead to change—feeling better about yourself, shifting patterns that have kept you stuck, and developing a greater sense of agency and fulfillment in your life.

I believe we are all capable of improving our lives. Many of us become stuck or overwhelmed in the process due to self doubt, insecurity, lack of self esteem, past or present trauma and losses, to name a few. Seeking therapy doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with you. Life is challenging. Sometimes we need a little help in identifying and overcoming the barriers that hold us back. Therapy can be a powerful tool in helping you gain insight and strengthen your skills and confidence in developing new patterns and behaviors that help enhance the quality of your life.

We - as humans - at times get anxious, sad or stuck. Major life transitions, such as life stage or relationship changes, career or identity crises, or significant loss, can leave us questioning ourselves as well as our sense of direction and purpose. On the other hand, we can long for change but don't know how to create it, leaving us feeling stagnant or trapped. I combine an actively curious, accepting and collaborative approach with a secure therapeutic framework to help my clients navigate change and live life with more vitality, meaning and satisfaction.

Life hurts. It just does. We all go through tough times at some point. Tragedy and hardship hit unannounced. These events have a lasting impact - even subtle ones - especially if they took place during our formative years. They can leave us on high alert, isolated, stressed out, hating ourselves, experiencing nightmares, not being able to feel joy, or to concentrate. If you have experienced any kind of trauma, be it a massive event that you didn't recover from, the repeated attrition of abuse, or the subtle and insidious wounding of emotional neglect, there is hope.

I am passionate about helping my clients create positive change in their lives. In my career, I have helped people from all walks of life who struggle with depression, anxiety, symptoms related to traumatic experiences, self-esteem issues and biologically based mental illness. Even though their stories and lived experiences varied, each sought support because they wanted to feel better, decrease their sense of isolation and increase positive coping skills. I love to help my clients discover their inner strengths, increase their feelings of personal safety, deepen their sense of agency and reclaim ownership of their lives.

Therapy can be a wonderful way to become more self aware, build new skills to address unexpected challenges, heal and move forward. My career in social work is rooted in person centered, solution-focused treatment that highlights the strengths and resiliency of the folks I serve. I encourage clients to interrogate which systems of oppression have molded their sense of self and worldview. I have experience working with individuals struggling with eating disorders, anxiety, trauma, and those wishing to fine tune interpersonal- familial skills.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
